I have a 08 masi and i've had it for about three months, there are chips in the chain stay on both sides and at the bottom of the seat tube. I would imagine that i would get chips on the underside of the frame not the top. I'm going to touch the spots up but has anyone had trouble with steel frames chipping easily, specifically the 08-09 masi frames?

Painted will chip no matter what, powder coats are a more durable color cover. Some paint jobs are known to chip more than others (Debernardi's anyone?) - I don't know about Masi frames though

yeah i agree with the debernardi's you would be lucky to find one with 75% of the paint intact.

any suggestions for touch ups? My deal said fingernail polish since masi wont send out the matched paint.

Italian bikes are very well known for their delecate paint jobs. Is it chrome under the paint? I would just leave it unless your are having it touched up by a pro. Bad touch up will kill the resale value of the bike

yeah you can use nail polish to cover up the paint that is missing and also help from the other paint surrounding the area to not chip off.

I'm partial to a bike that looks like someone actually rides it.

my true concern is the smaller chips flake off more paint and/or lead to rusting. Is there anything to seal the chipped area? I was thinking about getting it professionally clear coated. Anyone hear of clear powder coating?

You can do clearcoat powder coating, and a lot of shops recommend it to make it look purty. Normally, you'd do the base coat, any secondary coat, apply decals (if any), then the powder clearcoat.

Unfortunately for your idea, they don't clearcoat in powder over a wet paint frame The reason the powder coat is so strong is because it's baked onto the frame, and paint won't take the heat. The standard practice is to strip the frame to bare metal before coating, either chemically or with sand/plastic-particle blasting; then fill the dents, then coat/bake. Here's a FAQ that describes the steps.

    Good idea, though...
