From the velospace blog, Anti-Spam Measures
velospace now has some additional anti-spam measures. The past 24 hours has featured two rounds of scripted prescription spam bots. Each time the bot created a new account, added 250+ spam comments in about a minute, and then left town.
To combat this type of drive-by spamming I added a 60 second delay between comment posts. There are lots of other tools like this in use on the site, and I may roll this out to other types of content, or increase the time period, if spam continues to be a problem.
Any questions or ideas, drop me a note.

How about, you have to upload a picture with stats, or wait a day before posting, whichever comes first? That would mean that someone would have to build a custom Velospace spambot, which would be a waste of human effort.
Captcha or similar things, when setting up accounts, seem to work well.
There's also an Akismet plugin for Drupal, apparently. -

(It also means that there's a waiting period if someone sets up an account just to talk shit, which seems to happen with some regularity. I think it would discourage bad behavior.) -

Tried akismet? Comments are forwarded there for checking before being allowed on your site. Seems to work okay. Some sites use a simple math question as a second line of defense instead of capchas, which some users hate. -
