  1.
Good day. Anyone who has one of the early 90's Schwinn Aluminum bikes (754, 974 etc.) knows this issue. The seatpost is one of these rare internal expanding bolt seatposts; like a quill stem. They're heavy and they wear out. I was looking for a replacement, but I may have an easier time finding an honest person in Congress. Which brings up option (?) 2. Can a seatpost clamp be retro-fitted onto a frame that has no cutout on the back of the seat tube? Does the tube need to be cut into? What are the issues? What happened to the actor who played John Boy Walton?
  2.
Does the seat tube come up high enough to fit a seat post clamp? I dont' see any reason why you couldn't drill a hole an inch down, and nicely cut the slot down the back. As long as you did it nicely, had enough room to fit a seat post clamp on, and also had a clamp that would fit the outside of the diameter of the seat tube it should work fine.

Don't blame me if it doesn't work out, I'm just saying, if it was my bike, that's what I would do.

and he was in Stepfather 3, an episode of Matlock in 1993, Living in Oblivion, Box of Moonlight in 96, Poodle Springs in 98, and most recently, Infamy in 2004.

i was thinking that myself, you'd just have to find one long enough. and commit to using a bmx saddle.

Let us know what happens - I love those old Schwinn 974's. If you ever get a 53/54cm and want to sell the frame look me up!

I'll see if the LBS wants to help out on that. Thanks.

hey bigben13 just saw your comment today, mine tube diameter is 27.2 and i remember that there was one by american classic sold on ebay for around 60 bucks. Hope that help. And cutting, drilling and modding the seat tube to fit any conventional seat post are highly recommended for professional one since you DO NOT want to hear a snap and next thing you know is you are next to the curb or maybe worse.
