the tange is temping but is is too small i am 6foot and i wont buy the frame until this summer, july
  5.
If you're willing to spend up to $1600 on a frame, I would think you'd accept that just because something is steel doesn't mean it has to be heavy. The way this is going, I'm gonna say go buy yourself a Cinelli Vigorelli and a thomson stem and call it a day

bmc doesn't make that track machine anymore. that frame went for $3000+ retail.

i hate posts like this. if you are willing to spend 1600 dollars on a bike, you shouldn't have to ask. Not even for opinions. Buy a leader and open a savings account.
  7.
i have been looking at a ti dean a van dessel the silver one not the greeen one with all curved tubes a scadmium gurotti scrach pista a bianchi consept a merexx a issac but it is 2200 but i think i might be able to work it into my budget and the new cinelli and mash combo most of the bikes are on

is spicer a "off brand" or is it more like a lesser known name brand like jamis or radline?
  9.
i guess i could go with a steel frame but it cant go over 4.5pounds, but how do you keep it from rusting?

no, spicer is custom/semi-custom company, and a great one at that. gene has the best customer service around and could make you a damn hott looking aluminum or ti frame for $1600.
    look at greg's ride: http://velospace.org/node/123

you should get one of these: http://spicercycles.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=426 and have a custom ti fork made like in the ebay listing ^

or something in aluminum like this: http://spicercycles.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=453

shit if you are really willing to drop that kind of money on a track frame for the street just get something ridiculous.
  10.
for 1600 bucks you should get a road bike because no offense, a 1600 dollar frame for you would be an unwise investment judging by your interests.
  11.
If you have $1,600.00 to spend on just a track frame for riding on the street...don't waste your money. Seriously. It's a waste of money. You don't need some plastic (carbon fiber) aero frame for riding around your neighborhood or whatever else you have planned.

Is this your first track bike build after only riding a shitty conversion?

Anyway, just get something like a Pista Concept D2 or a Van Dessel Drag Strip and build it up with good parts.

Spending thousands of dollars on a frame to save 1-2 pounds on frame weight is not going to make you a better rider.

I'm sorry, but this post reminds me of old guys that buy super expensive sports cars to have as their "sunday car" to just show off.

Better idea....use some of that money to get more educated, so you know how to use proper punctuation and spell and type better.
  12.
Yeah, Spending that much money on a frame for riding around our little town is a complete waste. Why are you so against steel frames? I put in a lot of miles in Springfield, I would not want to get beat up by an aluminum frame.
  13.

This would be good for riding around your city and track standing in the streets.
  14.
I have an 80's steel track bike that weighs 16.2lbs complete. Not a carbon part on it. Yeah, you can get a lighter frame but as everyone is saying on here- why? When you get into very high dollar track bikes they suck on the street anyways because the clearence is so tight- you wil wedge rocks between your fork crown and your tire. And forget about riding with anything but a 20c tire- they won't fit. I like what upthe maiden said.. "I'm gonna say go buy yourself a Cinelli Vigorelli and a thomson stem and call it a day". He hit it right on the mark. That silly Cinelli would be perfect.
  15.
oh, and I have a set of FSA Vigorelli track cranks that would match perfect to that Cinelli Vigorelli frame. I will make you a SMOKIN deal on them.
  16.
ok here is my situation i am 15 and this summer i am going to earn 3000 i wont ever be able to come close to that amount ever agin and i have a peice of shit trek so i thought hey why not get the best bike i can possibly get and use it until it is no more. if you would have read the top you could have seen that i probbably will put a road fork on it so i can run a 23c tire and i never said i had to spend 1600 i was aready looking a 1000 van desel drag stip and other cheaper frames. so there you have it. oh and i had no idea that steel could get doun to16 pounds so thanks for that info.

how much is a cinelli vigorelli?
  17.
You dont really want one of those, they are silly trendy bikes that cost more then they are worth. It was kind of a joke. For what your doing, I would really consider a steel bike, and the good news is you do not need to spend anywhere near that amount of money to get a very nice, semi custom, well performing street steed, that will turn heads and gain the respect of all us old bike snobs...

and since you're only 15, i would stay on the cheaper side because in a year or two you're gonna outgrow that thing fast. i would invest more in parts.

have your lbs prpp the frame before you build it.
  19.
what is prpp and what would be a good steel frame and how should i keep the rust away and i have pretty much quite growing so changing frames isnt much of a problem
  20.
If you are only 15...you are going to GROW more. How tall are you know? If you are serious about riding track bikes, I HIGHLY suggest against buying a super expensive frame because you will outgrow it in a couple years or just become uninterested in biking as soon as you can get your drivers license.

A good quality steel frame with light wheels and good cranks can be just as light as any other bike. A steel frame that is fully painted will not rust. However, you can have "frame saver" coated in the frame to prevent rust inside if water enters.

For a steel frame, I suggest the new EAI-Godzilla track frame. I personally ride a EAI-Bareknuckle, along with many other people on Velospace and no one has any complains. The Godzilla is the upgraded Bareknuckle and is made of better tubing, slightly lighter and stronger.

I suggest keeping the frame/fork cost about 600-900 for a good quality street/track frame. Use the rest of your money on a set of good cranks and good wheels, because those are the other two most important things on the bike.
  21.
i dont use my current bikes for getting around just for crusing and having fun i not too exited for a car and i havent grown but a inch since 8th grade im now a 10th grader in high school and am 1 or2 inches below what my doctor said i would be when i am fully grown wich is 6'1 now i dont think im going to grow a foot as you make it sound. does a ti frame sound good if i have the money ,they are called a life long frame.
  22.
Don't bother with a titanium frame. Don't bother with a carbon fiber frame. And many people are even saying don't even bother with an aluminum frame.

Read this article on frame materials to become more knowledgeable.
    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-materials.html

    "Steel vs Titanium

Look at the chart again. You'll see that identical steel vs titanium frames would be about equal in strength, but that the titanium frame would be about half the weight and half the stiffness.
Such a frame would likely have a whippy feel due to the reduced stiffness, especially in loaded touring applications."

Terrible one..... Why should he stay away from carbon?

Are you serious? The last type of frame this kid needs would be a plastic frame. It's probably the worst choice for street riding as it would be most prone to failure. Not to mention, it would be a complete waste of money.

I don't even suggest riding carbon fiber parts for street riding because I've seen so many fail and people get seriously injured from it.

  29.
Come on now guys, of corse that would be a very smart thing for him to do. put some money in a savings account...... what 15 year old in his right mind is gonna do that!? I had the same type story when I was right at his age, maybe 14. I recieved $1400 from a will. I had never owned anything but a huffy, and wanted a nice bike. I ended up buying a Mongoose IBOC Team- full XT, and I put a first gen. Rock Shock on the front of it (I saw them advertised in the back of MBT action, and had to have it, Suspention has come a long way to say the least) and had a set of wheels built up with those old nuke proof hubs. I think I was the first person in town to have rock shocks. I think if I had not had that bike, I would not be the bike dork I am today.

Okay. Whatever. You're right. Buy a complete carbon fiber plastic bike for fixed/street riding. I highly recommend it. It's the PERFECT frame material for that kind of riding and would be much better than steel and aluminum.
  31.
NO, NO, please, explian to all of us the cons of carbon fiber for street riding, and supply us of where we can find this verifiable info- because I think you know something that NONE OF US KNOW about carbon bikes....
  32.
carbon fiber isnt plastic, its a graphite/resin composite. i still think it sucks though
  33.
imo carbon fiber dampens too much of the road vibrations which can tend to reduce rider confidence esp. in corners, and if you cant corner fast whats the point? plus they just arent as durable, i.e. the tensile strenght of carbon fiber is very high but most of the rigidity and structural integrity comes from the resin which has a pretty pathectic tensile strength, around 100 psi i think
  34.
again. post some links from reputable sources on these claims.
