What do you guys think about sugino messenger cranks? I wanna upgrade from my stock, shitty truvative touro and I've been considering the messengers. I've been able to find them for around $175 and that's about what I wanted to spend, is there anything for that price that would be a better choice? Is the messenger a pretty solid crankset? -

You can definitely get them for less than that. In fact:

And in black:

You'll have to get a new BB, but you can use the same chainring, Touros and Messengers have the same BCD. I'd recomend the Sugino 75 BB. Anyhow, there is nothing inherently wrong with the cranks, they are fairly light, fairly stiff and look good. Plus they are at a pretty damn good price. Why not? I have some on my Kilo TT and my Langster. They work, so I'd reccomend them. -

Oh the price I was talking about was for the crankset and the chainring. I've been thinking about changing from my 48 tooth to a 46. -

sugino 75 bottom bracket and the sugino messenger won't fit together. 75's are iso, rd messenger's are jis. also they bottom bracket spindle lengths are way different, so your chainling would be super off if you put them together. 103mm for the messenger, 109mm for 75's. totally different and incompatible. -

you should also check out the Kazane cranks. pretty strong cranks with 144bcd so you can run track chainrings.
$125 and comes w/ bottom bracket.

Ellwood- You would not be upgrading ANYTHING by purchasing a set of sugino RD (messenger) cranks. Even if they weigh 9 grams less....so what. If you want to make an upgrade, the only wat to do so is to buy a set of REAL track cranks. By that I mean cranks with a 144bcd. The only benifit of that (for you) is there is a wider selection of chainring sizes in 144bcd. Also- as Patrick violence pointed out- there are 2 sizes of bb spindles JIS and ISO. Make sure you are getting the right match.
Rideseveryday, if your running a Sugino75 BB on your messenger cranks- its wrong. -

To be honest Ellwood- I wouldnt even change the cranks you are running. there is no point at all (Someone please tell me if I am missing a point). If you check out www.thebikebiz.com, I think you will be able to find a chainring tooth size that you want- that fits your existing cranks.
I guess if your wanting a diffrent color crank, the Sugino RD's make good since. But if it is performanced based upgrade - put your money into other parts!!! -

Sorry, I assumed Sugino 76s were JIS. My bad! -

Hey everyone thanks for all your input. I should have mentioned the other reason I was thinking about changing cranksets is that I think my stock ones are too long. I think they're 170 or 175 mm and they're too long for tight corners. What are the major pros and cons of running a little bit shorter crankset? -

if you're hitting on corners, then learn to turn better. they're most likely 170mm. depending on how tall you are, 165mm might be too short. -

most new ss/fixed bikes come with 165s from what I see. As Rabbi said- learn to turn. Dip between your pedal strokes. Also, The right pedals can give you much moor clearance.
