Do any of you guys have any experience with this? I have an old beater raleigh and I want to swap out the cottered bottom bracket spindle for a square tapered one. Any recommendatations you could provide, I would greatly appreciate. -

can't do it. raleigh bottom brackets are obsolete. no new bottom brackets are made for that shell. shit outta luck dude. -

That's not quite as true as the spec sheet would have you believe. You have a couple of options.
1: Retap the threads from 24tpi to 26tpi.
2: Do what I discovered I could do: clean and grease the threads really, really well, then force the Bb into place. My brother's bike had this done to it by an LBS and we wound up doing the same thing to my sister's when we realized what had been done. -

nut if you strip them you're screwed. a better option would be to just find a spindle that has the same diameter. it shouldnt be too hard, then just swith it out with the cottered one just keeping the original bb cups and bearings -

Yeah, if you can find an appropriate Bb, it's obviously better.
It's hard to imagine stripping those threads. The diameter of a Bb is really big and it gets a lot of purchase before it binds.
Assume that it will be at least an afternoon's work. Otherwise, you're going to wind up with a bloody nose. -

not really. there are cheapo repair bbs that don't require threads. but switching out the spindle still sounds like the best way to go -

Thanks for the help guys & gals! What I ended up doing was reusing the old cups & bearings (which were suprisingly not that bad) and swapping in a square taper axle. My next question is, has anyone ever had issues with different tapers on a square taper axle? What I mean is like a different degree of ramp on the taper. -

theres really only two tapers campy and standard. superbe is the same as campy. your better off using the appropriate crank for the taper although you can get away with mixing and matching if you have to
