I've seen bandanas on the top tube, does it serve any purpose or is it just aesthetically pleasing?

Nevermind, I found out what the answer is. It's to protect the frame from being damaged when the handle bars swing around. It's like a home made Kashimax (http://www.businesscycles.com/frameprotect.htm).
  1.
except that it doesn't do shit
  2.
electrical tape is wayyy better and doesn't come off as easy, or even bar tape.

except you don't want to be putting adhesive on a nice paintjob. even more-so on a cheap paint job that is the best you can afford. I agree the bandana is ummm.... yeah, but tape? C'mon! on second thought, lets do a robbery I'll put a bandana on my face then duct tape your loud mouth. just like all the rest of the loud mouth people on here who spend more time talking S@#$ to new cyclists than getting out and riding. put that in your tube and pop it bi@(h!!!

rim tape makes an awesome top tube protector as well.
