I know there are already similar "best of" threads, but... What lower end drive train components have you had good luck with?
I'm putting together a beater bike to use for some occasional lengthy commutes, and am looking for ideas on components that can withstand a lot of abuse, especially from my girlish (240lbs) figure.
Suggestions? -

for cranks, look for some old shimano 600/105
they'll probably run you about $50 and will be better that most "track" cranks nowadays
things to invest in:
good chain (wipperman IG-8)
good tires(or least a good rear tire)
DO NOT BUY ROCKET RINGS OR BULLETPROOF CRANKS. -

I've used both of these cranks and they are great and cheap. For a cheap chain, I like KMC ones. -

Get the more expensive one, it'll end up costing you less in the long run. -

Once again, I've never had any problems with either rocket rings or bulletproof cranks. Yeah, they're cheapo cranks, but on a conversion they're fine.
What is your problem with them? -

Just another post saying don't get rocket rings. I rode one for a few weeks, and not only did it make creaking noises like hell because it flexed so much, but the teeth were all "shark finned" and worn in a few weeks! They are really soft metal. -

I have ridden a pair of sugino RD cranks for years on my main bike, and they've held up ok. I think you could find a pair on ebay for about $25, if they're more than that I wouldn't bother. You need the 103mm bottom bracket with them. After so many times of swapping pedals the threads will need cleaned out with a tap, but after that they're fine.
Other than that, I think you're ALWAYS better off going with some old shimano/sugino road cranks than buying cheap track cranks. -
