I have a 1972 Nishiki American Eagle. I've researched the serial number under the bottom bracket to find out the make and year of the frame. Question: does anyone know the right headset and bottom bracket to fit this frame? It has Sugino 171 (Sun Tour) cranks and cable stays for Dia Compe 750 brakes. Once again, Headset?, Bottom Bracket? Cost? Availability? Retailer? -

Does your AE look like this one?

If so, it's likely to be a standard bottom bracket -- English thread, 68mm shell. Anything Shimano will do. Same thing on the headset -- nothing special required. Is the headset bad though? Even if it's pitted, you can usually clean it out, regrease, and ride it for a while. Only if one of the cups (bottom in particular) is fractured would you need to replace the whole thing. If you're resourceful, odds are you can go to a local used-bike shop and get the part you need. I have an old Holdsworth that has a headset made of three different headsets -- a race here, a cup there, etc. It just has to turn smoothly. In any case, this is something your LBS can handle. -

it's almost identical to this http://www.frankencycle.com/images/ryan%27s%20american%20eagle%20001.jpg I think you are right. I am fairly mechanical and can fix many things. But whenever I go about fixing something new I run across one of those stupid tricks of the trade. It usually ends up being something fairly simple that I can fix, but the fact that I had to be shown drives me crazy. Thanks for your advice. -

As far as I know, Nishiki never strayed from the industry standards. So it is more than likely a 68mm BB with a one inch headset. If it is like the bike in the picture, then I am 99% sure.
Like latron said, bring it to your LBS. They will tell you in second, probably for free.
