I recently came into a bit of cash, and was looking to perhaps get a Pista Concept. Save the hipster comments, but it's main job would be street transportation, however, it would see some track time.

Anyhoo, I have heard two sides to the story. Some say it's fine for street riding, but I have heard of seat clamps cracking, head tubes cracking, etc. etc.

So basically I wouldn't want to buy the bike, crack it in a week and have no money and a cracked frame. And insight on their durability? Are all the people that fuck their frames just getting dive bombed by cars or over tightening their seat clamps, or are rough streets too much for the Concept? Thanks.

i've seen a few black Concepts(2003) riding around in the streets of SF.

just take care of what you invest in.
  2.
The bike will definitely be babied, but I don't want to have to avoid every expansion joint and such.

    Steel > everything else
  3.
It should be fine as long you're not jumping down stairs and such with it.
  4.
Aiight.I agree steel=win, but the concept is soooooo gorgeous. And sooooooo fast. Aiight, it'll be for riding to work, around the campus, etc. So the consensus is it won't rape me. Cool.
  5.
I was debating between a Concept and EAI Bareknuckle. I went with the Bareknuckle for many reasons. Go see my thread Pista concept vs. EAI Bareknuckle on here.

The bike is only as fast as the rider. It's not like you are going to hope on that certain brand of bike, and it automatically go 10x faster. Haha.

my concept sure accellerates a whole lot faster than my steel pista with the same wheels on it.
  7.
The seat binder cracking comes from the fact that people run seatposts that extend too far out of the seat tube, stressing that weak area...

If you're going to be locking up every day, I'd suggest something with thicker tubing than the Concept. I'd hate to have someone dent mine because they were in a hurry to lock up their POS department store bike.
  8.
A friend of mine that rides a Pista Concept had it locked to a street sign and she came out of the bar to find some homeless guy was shaking her bike really hard against the sign, expecting the lock to just give up eventually and magically pop off. She asked him what he was doing, and he said he really wanted to bike. He walked off. Anyway, it left a HUGE 2" long and deep dent in her top tube. She still rides it however.
  9.
Aiight, this bike will be rarely locked and will be more of a weekend cruiser type deal. Thanks for the help/lack of hate.

if its just being used as a cruiser/long trip bike then the concept is a good choice. it's certainly more durable than you might expect. after all, it is a bike and not a feather? that sounds a little silly :)

be careful but don't baby it.
  10.
i know two people who have fucked their concepts this week.
  11.
Steel over aluminium always. Pista concept is ultra beautiful though.
Patrick takes it up the ass

im kind of curious as to the type of people patrick associates himself with. maybe being acquainted with one person who fucks bikes on a weekly basis is acceptable, but two, thats a different story all together.

i'm sure we have all had the urge, but really.

one guy crashed not going that fast, the other guy was doing tricks (leg caught between the crank and downtube, denting the shit out of it)
  14.
    Two problems:

    1. I don't crash

    2. I don't do tricks.

Looks like the frame will last me!

It seems to me like $500 would be a good asking price for a used frame. What do you guys think? Just trying to make an imformed decision....

You see, I want to buy the frame at the rider price ($500) not the hipster price ($800).
  15.
    good luck with that.
  16.
No shit. But seriously, can I get get some advice.
  17.
Advice on what? You've got tons of advice already, and you already seem to have your mind made up about buying the bike.

You want advice on where you buy one for a few hundred dollars less than what they are currently selling for? Well yeah...wouldn't we all like that info.

Just watch Ebay. This one just sold for 760 bucks and it had Sugino 75's and Phil Wood wheels. This person got a fucking STEAL on this. Why did it not sell for more? Who knows. http://cgi.ebay.com/Bianchi-Pista-Concept_W0QQitemZ270330319250QQihZ017QQcategoryZ159089QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Here is another one, but sold for nearly 1,700. Same bike, same cranks, different wheels (not what you want for street riding). Why the huge price difference though? Thats ebay.

    Goodluck.
  18.
I say go for it man, if you feel comfortable with an aluminium frame, its a beautiful and well constructed bike. Everyone has horror stories, but its not like its made out of air.

Now is the best time of the year to buy a bike. The weather sucks, people aren't riding alot, and people selling their stuff on ebay really need the money because otherwise they'd wait until the 1st nice weekend in March / April and dump their stuff when everyone is buying.

Also, that $1000 price difference is because of sizing. Not many people can ride a 61cm concept because its so huge , a 51cm concept fits a whole lot more people.

I meant advice on what amount to offer based on year/ size/ etc. I really can't seem to figure out what they are truly worth because I figure that a used frame should go for about 65% to 75% of their original price, but I've seen them change hands for like $850. So I was just wondering if anybody could tell me if I should go elswhere (I don't want to drop more than $600 on the frame) or if I could realistically get one in the $500s.

    retail is $580ish?
or do you want a black or celeste one?
  20.
if you find one in that price range, fucking pull the trigger. i'm not badmouthing the frame, i've ridden one before and it feels fucking amazing.
  21.
I'm talking just the frameset. Sometimes it feels hopeless though, because I see used frames changing hands at really high prices. It's the whole Aerospoke phenomenon.

The reason I want one so damn bad is I also got the chance to ride one. Changed my life.

I prefer black and celeste over the white, but I'll take any. Do you have one per chance?

i'm getting a replacement for mine that cracked from a crash. it's a 55 but i'm hoping to turn it around for monies to fund a track champion.
  22.
do not get it...i got one and was not rough with it but the seat post still cracked on me.

wtf rideeveryday in the EAI Bareknuckle vs. Bianchi Pista Concept thread you said "I'd say that the right decision was made with the Bareknuckle, it's a nice frame and it won't rape you over expansion joints like a pista concept would." what made you change your mind?

It's not about the hipster comments, it's that its fucking stupid how many people want one for street use.

    it's fucking stupid.

Only a fucking jackass trying to fit in would actually buy one, they're soo fucking played out. fucking morons, there's much better bikes. But you gotta get the ones that people look at when you ride by cause it makes you feel good inside.

are you hating because they're played out or because you absolutely disagree with them being used for the street? i don't really understand why it matters (or why i'm interested in why you're angsty)?

does anyone know who makes the pista concept fork?

Well, I was moody when I posted that. But I just don't like how bianchi produces it to sell to trendhoppers. Not everyone's a trendhopper who rides one, but just the whole idea... and tha there's better/better looking bikes out there.

when they sold it as a complete, it came with tubulars. now a shit ton of people that don't race want them. can you blame them for trying to make money? same thing sugino, nitto, miche, hatta, etc are doing by producing their parts in 50 different colors. i'd go as far as to say that 85% of the sugino 75's on bikes today have never seen a velodrome.
  25.
Yeah not tryin to hate on the pista concept but it's like when you're gonna shell out that kinda money for a bike why not get a frame that's just as nice looking, probably much kinder out on the streets, and spend the extra money on components that are gonna last you forever.
I'm not saying you gotta run out and buy some gnarly lookin joint just cause it's bombproof and every douchebag with a fuckin belt buckle across their chest has a concept right now. Just sayin you really should (or should have, I'm assuming you're already rollin on the thing) sit down, map out your budget, figure out what components are best / affordable then take what's left over and see about the frame to put it all together. Everyone seems to start with the frame and too often leave everything else to be desired.

Or do things your way. You asked though :)
