hi all
i have a sugino messenger crankset, a sram chain, and an eai cog. gearing is 46 17. a pretty standard setup for fixies...nothing special.
problem: I get a creeking sound at the same point in the chainring's rotation. There is also a noticabe abnormal rubbing because rotation stops at the same point when i flip the bike over and rotate the drivetrain. LBS suggested readjusting the chain allignment (by repositioning the hub at the dropouts) and ive also lubbed it to death but still can't shake that squeaky little creak!
my next move is to replace the chain (rationale: a bent pin and/or link)
anyone else experience this? suggestions on what to do? a diagnosis perhaps?
thanks! -

for the binding...
when you spin the pedals they always stop at the same spot? is your wheel true or is your tire bulged? it could be that at one point in the wheels rotation you are getting some rubbing.
also are you using a loose bearing or cartridge bb? if it is loose bearing did you install it? make sure it is not overtight, it is okay if there is a whisper of play. also (while it is certainly not enough to cause serious binding) was the bb shell faced before the bb was installed.
this is on a track bike right? your chain line shouldn't be off enough to cause issues i see on your soma you have a profile rear which i think uses a 45mm chainline just like your crank. (correct me if i am wrong)
also your chain could be too tight loosen it up a touch and see if the at helps.
for creaking its almost always one of two places, the chain ring or the crank arms attaching to the spindle. make sure all the chain ring bolts are tight and that the ring is centered on the spider. also try rotating the ring over one bolt, with use they wear down and go out of round all of which can cause your chain to bind a certain spots.
usually the creak is in the ring but also make sure your crank is tight and that the tapers are still in good shape.
i would say most likely it is in the chain ring or bb
thats all i can think of for now, i hope that helps. -

could be your pedals.... -

this happened to me once, it was a bearing in my pedals, dirty, i cleaned them out and no more squeek. before cleaning them, i threw the bike trying a keo spin, and the squeek temporarly went away. -

It's probably your chainring. I had the same problem with only ONE certain chain ring I rode. No other gave me a problem, just only one!
Try lubing up all chainring bolts well, and making sure they are all SUPER tight. I think the sound comes from when you put enough pressure on the crank, it causes the ring to flex slightly. -

or your seat post is slipping, which could cause creaking as well...but since its at the same point in your crank's rotation, its probably your pedals. -

mystery solved!- it turned out to be a few loose chainring bolts..not sure how they got loose so fast because i just finished the build (the soma).. *shrugs* i guess they just weren't installed right.
a few of you mentioned the chainring spot on,,anyway thanks for the tips
consider this post sunk! -

Put some grease on your chaingring bolts and tighten them down - it will help them stay put -

If it's a new build, expect EVERYTHING to start coming loose very soon. Headset, bottom bracket, hubs, etc. You will need to tighten everything up. -

Thanks for your valuable insight that this nearly 8 month old thread clearly couldn't have withstood going without being revived for .... -

haha.
I think the best fix would be a brake lever under the seat. -

TWO brake levers: One for the front and one for the back! -

you are absolutely welcome mr sfbee. every time you use a lever like that someone is going to think you have a wedgie. or hemorrhoids. or that you're just a sick bastard. sounds great. -

I've probably just now put about 50 miles on my new fixed build and its developed a really strange squeaking sound in the crank area. I originally thought it was the leather of my toe straps rubbing past the crankarms, it doesn't sound like the metallic creak of loose chainring bolts or that sort of 'clunk' sound you get form a loose BB... I ran it by the LBS and an employee took a quick spin on it and didn't hear anything, so I'm stumped. Everything's tightened down, what the heck? -

Try pedaling out of the saddle. -

Still squeaks even out of the saddle. emballs mentioned a bad pedal bearing as a possible culprit, and I do have some cheap-o wellgo track pedals on there, but still... its a weird squeaking noise, like shoes on a linoleum floor, and my tires aren't rubbing. -

Do you have a cartridge BB with a plastic retaining cup? If so, check to make sure it was installed completely clean, dry and tightened securely. Any of the above will cause rapid wear, squeaking and eventual failure.
