Fix hips bikes that dominate this site is a trend and will wear off eventually. Only true aficionado's will keep on collecting real track bikes.
Look at the market price on Ebay on serious track stuff, I was able to buy a pair of NOS C-Record "sheriff" hubs for $300 or a complete C-Record track crank in a box for $200. same goes with NJS goods, nobody was even looking at that stuff. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of nice hipster bikes on the site but look at the price kids paid for them. I still can't believe a cheap "made in Taiwan" Cinelli Vigorelli or Bianchi concept frame sells for $600. when a full blown new Colnago or De Rosa steel/lugged frame sold for roughly the same price just a few years back. It's insane! -

The Bianchi Pista? Its a relatively cheap beginner track bike with true track geometry and is stocked in many bike shops. Or... Because it's the first bike a hipster sees because its chromed out. So he/she takes pictures of so bike and posts on here. -

gone, i think you are right
but it doesn't mean the good stuff has gotten cheaper
it just means the new crap has gotten more expensive
it's still expensive to get a classic track frame, some people are just spending as much on some frame made 3 months ago in china -

it just means the new crap has gotten more expensive (Yes, it goes with the demands but soon enough it will wear off when the trend change)

I don't see why used aerospokes go for new prices. -

Because it's what people will pay for them. That's the magic of Ebay. -

there is going to be a market crash in aerospokes, like no other market crash we have seen before -

Which is totally weak for poor people. There really isn't a happy medium with fixies these days. You see it in every other area of bikes, the new ones go from like $300 to $500 to $1000, etc. With fixies you buy a crappy flex machine for $300 bucks or you have to buy an aluminum generic bike for $1200. WEAK WEAK WEAK WEAK WEAK. Especially when the bike becomes a piece of furniture or a conversation piece outside the local coffee shop. That's where Pistas are cool. Some hipster bitch in her too tight jeans and her lumberjack shirt sees some hipster dude wearing the same thing riding a chromed Pista outside of the JavaConnection or Java the Hut or some gay coffee shop and she's like, "Oooooo, I want to have sex with him." Then more Pistas get bought. Good for Bianchi, bad for me, cuz I'm off some where riding my ass off on my shit bike because these hipsters drove up the price of the ghetto components. Let's face it, a Pista or a Kilo TT or any of those lower end bikes really aren't all that different. But the Pista costs like $200 bucks more. Seriously. Why can't somebody make cheap, bullet-proof components for fixies that don't cost an arm and a leg?
Anyhoo, off the rant.
Pistas look like they might have been made in the eighties, you can get one in chrome. That's why everybody like them. -

That's exactly what I said at the beginning of this tread. Hipsters brought the prices up on themselves on cheap alloy frames and anodized parts! Glad I got my good old shit together a few years back before the trend started. -

you can build up a much nicer bike for the same price if you know how and where to shop. i think alot of new comers to the bike scene think it's high quality because they recognize the name. DeRosa? never heard of it, I'd be better off with the higher quality bianchi. then within a few months, they get this whiff of NJS and everything changes for them. they dream of having deep pockets to ride a coveted japanese machine, still ignoring the oodles of boutique frames still going for real-world prices. if your friends run alex's on formula hubs and a truvativ touro crank, then it must be good right? -

to answer the original question:
i think that the single most important reason why pistas/track bikes/fixed gears/whatever dominate this site (and many others) is simply a matter of demographics. i'd be willing to bet that the general user on this site is both young and male. the specific reasons why young men are drawn to this style of bike less important (i'd rather not start a rant about my socio-economic theories on the matter).
track bike trend is largely dominated by young men.
young people are appear (to me) more likely to use "social networking" sites, and are generally more proficient with technology (arguable).
young men make up the greatest proportion of using velospace.
gross oversimplification.
