My favs were an old pair of suntour pro's cause they were pretty light and rolled so smooth but they are now worn out and its time to buy new ones. what are your favorite hubs and why? -

High flange Phil's. Put them through years of abuse, never had to do a thing to them. Probably the bike part I think about least -

any issuces with the chain-line on the profiles? i know they use a 44mm chainline and and standard track hubs use 42mm -

I'm running Sugino 75's with a Phil Wood 110mm BB, along with a Surly cog....and the guy who set it up for me did not even have to do any fussing around to get it right when installing. It was perfect, and runs totally smooth and silent.
I was not aware they used a different chainline, but it seems to not have affected anything in the slightest. -

I'm running Phil's now and I love them. Considering Profiles but need to know what's different. -

blockquote>the weight for one.
Profile or Phil lighter? I'm assuming Profile. -

yeah a set of profiles weighs around 500g and a set of phils is around 600g -
- CommentAuthorterrible_one49

Hmmm...My profiles weight in at 270g for the rear, and high flange phil wood of the same length is 417g each. So, 294g lighter, about, for a set.
But of course, weight is not everything.
I also like the design of the Profiles, and how they use the sealed cone spacers on the sides. -

One of the specs that I love on Phil's are the hex axle bolts. Profile's got these as well, but nearly every set of Profiles I've seen seem to have rusted axle bolts. What gives? -

I loved my phils, but I hated the axle bolts, they easily strip.
Im using mavic ellipses now and theyre super light and strong. As far as looks go, I love the classic look of the dura ace high flange hub. -

When I first got my Profile hubs, I'm rode them in the rain one day, and the next morning the bolts were all bright red with rust. I emailed a complaint to Profile saying they should chrome plate them or something, so they don't rust. However, they said something along the lines of how strong the bolts need to be, the black oxide heat treated CrMo steel was the strongest they could make, but the downside is they rust. They said just spray some WD40 on a rag and wipe them off.
They right away sent me out a set of new bolts and a set of their hub cone spacers-http://www.profileracing.com/estore2/index.php5?productid=263
I'm not really sure WHY they sent me these new parts, because they were really NOT needed...but it's surely a sign of a good company that will go out of their way to please customers and make sure things are right! It's nice to have an extra set of bolts and spacers anyway, in case they strip or anything.
However...Profile DOES make the titanium bolts for their track hubs which will NOT rust, and are 14g lighter for a set of two. -

anybody know anything about the 08 american classic track hubs? they seem stupid light at 285g per set?!!? that seems rediculous by comparison to everything else out there..... i wonder how they hold up?
weights of other popular hubsets : phils 600g, profile 500g, paul 651g, suzue pro max 575g, dura ace lo-flange 501g, campy lo-flange 488g, zipp 704g, white ind 516g. -

i really thought hard about getting the american classic track hubs for one of my rides. i live in st. paul we have a lot of shops i the twin cities area but it 100% qbp basically. now i don't have any problems with qbp but they overprice the hubs so much that they ended up being more expensive than phils (which i went with).
now i know on the intron-net you can get them for much cheaper (buy locally if you can) but after doing some research and talking to some wrench buddies of mine i got the impression that some of the hubs are super janky.
i dont know if this is a problem with older models that they have fixed, but i was told (no personal experience) that they have stripped below torque spec, that the bearings are crap, and that the way that the axles are spaced out with washers and locknuts(which seems a little sketchy for a cartridge bearing hub, just look at the axle http://www.amclassic.com/track.html) makes them difficult to service. unlike phils and a few others where you leave your cone wrenches at home and take the damn thing apart with an allen wrench if need be.
additionally, i can't find a picture on the ac page but the front hubs use the same enormous contact area on the axle (21mm?) which seems like it pose issues an a track rig with fairly minimalist fork ends.
this is just my opinion and info ive gathered while considering them myself. for all i know they are great. i have not heard anything bad about their track wheelsets which i believe use the same hub so who knows.
i would love to hear contrary opinions on the matter -

I have used Phils for a long time and love them. No complaints. American Classsic is on par with phil woods and weigh less. Same with Paul hubs. I had a set of campy record hubs from the 70's, they were smooth and rolled on and on and I never had them repacked or adjusted. Talk about longevity! The trusty Dura Ace 7600 high flange are also excellent. Gran Compe has a set of carbon hubs that look great. Has anyone tried them? I would like to know if they are worth it. Then of course there are the Zipp hubs(see above), the nicest hubs I have ever seen by one of the best companies in cycling. But at over 600 per set I'll just have to keep drooling over them. -

Yeah. Sounds to me like someone just likes to hoard bikes, or maybe just has an obsession with buying them. I'm sure if we all could afford it however, we would all probably be the same. However, I much prefer to just has one solid bike that is my baby, that really becomes a part of you over time. -

No doubt. I agree with both statements. However, I think because I think it's absolutely ridiculous to own five bikes well over $1000 (especially all the same type; track), but if I had that kind of money I'd have maybe two track bikes, road, and touring.
Anywho, I have Campagnolo hubs. i haven't seen the particular ones I have anywhere else in awhile. They're older but they ride so damn smoothly. -

what are some decent low-flange hubs? I would like to run a road hub in the front so I can use a pitlock, but I'd like a near matching track hub for the rear. I see the phil wood road hub and the low-flange rear track hub are identical, but are there any other options I should look into?

Hello everybody.
Someone could tell me if it is technically possible to modify a rear Phil Wood 32H high flange "road hub" 130 mm axle so it can fit on a frame that has 120 mm spacing between the back lugs.
Is it a question of taking out the "spacers" that is joined to the axle and putting shorter spacers if possible? The "Road hub" that I am actually talking about is built as a single fixed for a road bike.
Any input please all you mechanics?
Thanks a lot -

Guys my intent was only to built one bike. I purchased a pista concept and then rode my buddies cinelli and decided to buy one. After the first two I thought I was done and came across a pista concept and another cinelli at a good price so I bought them. Wasn't my intent but for what I paid for them I couldn't give it up! Now I decided to build a Leader and I feel like I can't stop. I use to BMX and race down hill mountain bike but riding a track bike is totally different. I still have my mountain bikes and BMX bikes but I really enjoy riding a track bike. Not trying to be a bike whore just trying to find the right bike for me. I really enjoy building them. -

ha-ha thats cause the purest in this game like most of these games is some obsessed young dude who don't work enough to afford what he really wants, doesn't wear deodorant and prefers the game to girls....
i'm just building my first bike and the component list out classes the frame by a whole lot...
funny thing is in terms of cost, owning nice bikes doesn't even compare to learning to fly aerobatic aircraft
if you work hard and make good money then having nice hobbies is the up side... the bad part is that people like me don't have so much time to enjoy the toys..
