My "Cinderella" bike (aptly named by a friend, since it was a beat up Schwinn conversion) has been out of commission for a while so I've been riding my mountain bike to school lately....until today. My bike was stolen. >_< It was a Trek 3700 mountain bike; I went down to the parking area at the college today and it was gone. I'm filing a police report tomorrow, and here's a question for you guys: Is it possible for my Homeowners/Renters insurance to cover it? I'm curious....
The good news is that I went ahead and bought a new bike. I went up to my LBS and decided on a KHS Urban Soul and I am already quite impressed. I'm not really that enthused about riding fixed gear and I'm not a road racer, so this bike fits the bill. It's lighter than my conversion, has a threadless headset, Weinmann wheels...I love it. My other option was a Specialized Tokyo that the guy had used for cheap:
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=38451
He had it for $400 with a Sugino crankset and some Deep-V wheels, but its too ostentatious for me...
So yeah, just figured I'd let you guys know what's going in the Dirty South, some other good news is that the guys at the shop offered that if I get a police report, to give it to them and they will seize the bike if someone brings it in.
Keep your stuff safe guys! -

Sorry to hear about the bike.... and who had that $400 Tokyo? Outback? What size was it?
I think the homeowners would only cover it if it was stolen from your house... not positive but i think thats how it works...
If something is stolen from inside your car, for instance, it can be covered by auto... not just out in the world though... -

Contact your agent. There is a huge variance in insurance plans and coverage regarding bikes. If you locked it up at school, I can't imagine you would be covered by any reasonable plan I've seen. If your lock was new(ish) and offered a theft warranty, I would try that.
If it had been locked in the parking area of your apartment complex, maybe. If it was in your apartment or house, definitely. Let us know what you find out from your agent. -

Thanks guys. Bug, the Tokyo is up at Skate Escape on Piedmont and 12th. It's a great looking bike, but I just couldn't see myself hittin the streets on it... So are you in ATL? Do you ever do any group rides? I've been hitting up the one that meets at little 5 on Monday nights, haven't been there lately b/c of school though (and my conversion being screwed)
Here's another idea for you guys: I've now got this '78 Schwinn that I don't plan on riding anymore, should I throw a little bit of money at it and sell it? Is it even worth it? It looks nice, and I'm wondering if I could get anything for it. To backtrack, I put an Origen8 crankset and BB on it, but the retaining bolt on the left side backed out and the BB and crank arm socket stripped....would it be worth the money to get another cheap crank and BB or should I just use it as an anchor now? -

Read your policy to figure out if your bike is covered and call your agent (as suggested) to see if he can help you figure it out -

The money you put in to upgrading/fixing a Varsity probably won't increase the value of the bike much. Just sell it as is. Don't expect more than $150, probably less than $100. I would certainly remove the offending crank arm. -

but what do I do with the bike then? Just sell it without a crank?Posted By: gregRead your policy to figure out if your bike is covered and call your agent (as suggested) to see if he can help you figure it out
Yeah, once I get the police report filed I will check into it. -

Yeah, pretty much. If the replacement arm is cheap, or you can find another arm in a parts bin, go for it. But most people buying a Varsity will be either converting it to a SS/FG or just need a cheap bike. IMHO pretty much any money you spend will be money donated to the new owner. -

Every renters' and homeowners' insurance deal I've seen covers bikes. Talk with your agent. Good luck! Good luck with the cops, too. In my experience, they don't care about stolen bikes, and one cop even told me to just steal it back when I found it (or one just like it).
Hit up your LBS for an appropriate crank arm. I bet it'll be $10. -

Right, but are they covered from theft outside the insured property? -

Nope. I'm assuming the intention is to report it as being stolen off the porch, or something along those lines.... That would be fraud though :) -

Yeah, and it doesn't help to have a discussion on the internet about it first. Not to mention the fact that the MSRP on it is like $350. -

I dunno. My parents' homeowner's insurance covered the theft of my computer in college. -

timmy, if you head out to SOPO bike co-op they may have a left crank arm (for like 5 bucks) to at least make it a rideable sale. -
