After i asked for directions to the library, the cop says "by the way...". If i would have just rode past him and not asked for directions, i would have saved money. if i would have smoked him on my bike, i would have saved a bunch of money. the county that charged me is intending to jack 180 dollars from me. that's a bit steep considering they seized the sign and charged my friend, in the same county, 40 dollars for misuse of the handicapped sign on a car. they also diagnosed it as not fixable, which is a total garbage since i can slip in brakes into the drilled hole in the front fork. if it is "not fixable" is the cop basically saying that my bike should not be ridden on the road ever even with the front brake? i put on a front brake already. Cops here are basically corrupt and have no bad guys to catch so they find things to punish. If i would have built up a conversion instead of buying a kilo, the amount they'd seize would have been about or around 180. -

FIGHT it. You are not brakeless. A fixed gear hub is a brake. If you slow down your pedaling the bike slows down. If you stop pedaling the bike stops. You can skid. It is at least as effective a a coasterbrake made in China.
In the UK and the EU bikes are required to have a brake on both wheels and you guessed it, you can have just a fixed gear hub in the back without a handbrake, so therefore a fixed gear hub is a brake. In our nations capital Washington DC you are not required to have a front brake on a fixed gear, because once again, a fixed gear hub is considered a brake.
I live in Portland where this whole stupid thing blew up about 3 years ago, and most of the people who fought it (some got lawyers) got the ticket thrown out, either it got dismissed or they put a brake on and took a picture.
The easiest way out is to slap a front brake on your bike and take a picture. Never mind the "they" say it can't be fixed, obviously "they" are ignorant.
And please let's not turn this into another motherfuckin' fixed brakes vs. no brakes debate, kids.
And never contact a cop unless you NEED one, they will always look for something to fuck with you for. They are not to be trusted. -

cops in my area just suck. i filed a police report after being hit by a SUV and they never got back to me. I ask a cop for directions on my brakeless fixed gear and i get 180 jacked from me. college cops are just garbage, all they do is destroy the parties and find garbage to dig up. The bike cop was a joke, he probably felt embarrassed since my bike was faster than his mountain bike. -

I would fight it and not pay it. There is enough videos and tests done online to support the case that you can stop just as well on a fixed gear as a coaster brake bike, which are street legal. -

The way out of this is to tell the cop you DO have a coaster brake, and show them a nifty sit-down skid. If your halfway good at them, they won't know the difference. It's worked for me several times. I've heard some messed up stories about the City of Oakland u-locking people's brakeless fixed gears, making the person pay a fine. Really fucked up. -

if you think about it, there are more ways to stop than lean forward and skid. the incident of pain only occurs when i skid for fun by trying to shift my weight forward. -

You can usually avoid the ticket by paying them fifty cents. Sometimes they'll even let you off the hook for a 50 Cent Vitamin Water. -

Mr. Lickwicked, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this discussion is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. -

I really don't feel like relaying the details of every time I've been pulled over on a (motorcycle) chopper or cafe racer, without committing a moving violation, just to be "checked out". Same thing with hot rods and lowered cars. Oddly enough I should have lost my license for reckless driving many times over, where is a cop when society needs one? Being tattooed and pierced doesn't help. Some cops think they are on "weirdo patrol", meanwhile every time the show "Fox's Most Wanted" on the nightly news I can't believe how average people look. I also don't feel like telling you about how many bike messengers I know who were pulled over while JRA and got a "no brakes" ticket after coming to a complete stop of course. The pigs were too lazy to chase them down for their more Lucas Brunelle style riding techniques. Basically if you stand out you get fucked with and I don't think I should have to fit in to not be fucked with, obeying the law should be enough. I'm older now and retired from Team HTO (Habitual Traffic Offender). Still get the occasional stinkeye from Johnny Law.
My experience is not unique, most of the like-minded individuals I've talked to can share similar experiences.
Douche bag cyclists can't shoot or taze you. -

Ifelt like the billy madison quote just fit.
Being someone who has been arrested twice, I have a hatred and fear of cops. Through my experience with cops, and my observations from the thousands of cop shows. They are pretty much just as paranoid as us. The first thing the cops say on 'The First 48' or 'Most Wanted' when they approach a scene is something along the lines of "When drugs and money come together there is always a great chance of violence", or "We have to be prepared for anything, there could be someone waiting with a gun at the front door when we enter". When you constantly think that your own life is in danger then you will act accordingly. Which means you will shoot a kid pulling a comb out of his pocket.
So in short, ALL cops think they are going to die (or atleast have a greater chance of) when pulling someone over, entering a home, or walking their beat. I think a cop is more dangerous then just about anyone else with a gun, frankly because they think they have to use it more then anyone else.
There my rant is over!
