Hey, so I'm interested in stripping my frame of its paint. I like the 'raw' look of it. I was just going to use paint-stripper to get it all off. Although, I'm a bit worried about the rust that can occur. My friend told me I should clear coat it afterwards. What is a clearcoat and how can I get it done? Can I buy something at a store to do it myself? -

If your frame is steel you must clear coat it or you will get rust. The 'raw' look will end up the 'hobo bike' look if you dont. I'm not encouraging you to strip your frame and clar coat it but if you insist... Go to the local automotive or hardware store and buy a can of clear coat spray paint. Use liberal amounts since you wont also be using paint and primer. -

Aircraft Paint Remover, look it up, buy it. Best way to strip a frame. (and the the least labor intensive, besides bead/sand blasting).
You can get it done by doing it yourself, unless you are talking about a professional clear coat.
You can buy clear coat at autozone, buy 2 cans, you will use about 1 and a 1/3. -

I'd really discourage you from clearcoating a steel frame. Clear doesn't have the weatherproofing characteristics of paint and will not protect your steel frame well. THEY DO however sell a paint that is made to look like bare steel that you could use and clear coat or spray it "steel" and get some matte grey/black and brown and antique it, either way unless you are really close you wouldn't be able to tell and it will protect your steel frame for future years when you may want to repaint it. -

Personally I sand the frame and get the nooks and crannies with a sand blaster. -

LyKqiD is right... after removing the paint, rub it down with lacquer thinner. Apply clearcoat ASAP -

I did my Schwinn conversion. Stripped it, brushed it with a wire brush, for a cool look. Clear coated with Automotive spray paint. It took me a day and a half -

Some options:
clear powdercoat
acrylic clearcoat
You might get a little surface rust over time but unless you leave it parked outside all winter laying on the ground it's not going to rust severely.
Gibbs Brand Penetrant. This stuff is used by hot rod builders when they want to leave a car in bare steel to show the quality of the metalwork they've done. It also works for aluminum, magnesium, etc. The cool thing about it is you can paint over it. http://www.roadsters.com/gibbs/ -
