New photo upload limits are here - I've increased the file size limit for each photo by 20% from 250kb to 300kb thanks to the new server specs.

    boo ya!

    yes, i went there

Perhaps a slight change to the language of the photo upload disclaimer is appropriate? Something along the lines of "make your file names unique or you will see photos of other peoples' shit instead of your own."
Excellent not to have to resize AND increase compression on JPGs now.

Just to clarify: The file size limits have gone up, but the pixel size limits have not? The upload page still says 1200x1024 max.

Correct. You can upload photos at 1200x1024 at 300kb. That means less compression, better looking photos, etc.

Does anyone think adding a sixth (or seventh) photo per bike would be worthwhile?
  5.
I've thought about that. The only time it matters to me is when I have five pics up, then want to put up an update, like a post-crash picture or whatever.

I am not even sure that many people put up 5 photos.

I kind of like it when people are forced to make these photoshop collages of their bike in order to post the detail pictures.
I saw a good one awhile ago, cant remember the bike though.

When I first saw that, I dope-slapped myself with the obvious ingenuity of it. In the velospace context, it's the ideal way to include photos of all your trick/weirdo components. I'm making one for each of my listings.

Hey, new feature idea: Would it be possible to incorporate straight HTML into the photo uploads, so that you could make an imagemap linked to larger photos? Or another option: Would it be possible to do thumbnail linking to the 1200x1024 photos, so that you could then load a larger photo from another site in a new window?

I agree, more than five seems unnecessary.

Collages are a good idea. Not simple to create, especially for the users who still haven't figured out how to get their own photos to display on their bike pages.

Google's Picasa can create collages on the fly. They aren't masterpieces but better than nothing.
There is also Collagr. It uses a Photobucket or Flickr address to create a collage. I've never used it, but it is free and seems pretty easy to use.

I like the imagemap idea, but not more than a handful of users would utilize it.

Maybe another bump in photo file size and dimension is in store then?

Well, I'm sure it is someday; but anything that increases the filesize on the velospace server increases the hosting costs, which is what my idea tries to avoid. I'm talking about using the 1200x1024 images stored on the velospace server as clickable links, so that clicking the main photo in a node page could load a new window with a larger photo already stored on an entirely different site (Photobucket, Picasa, Shutterfly, personal storage space etc.). This puts the server costs on the third-party site, rather than on Our Gracious Host.
  7.
Also, bumping up width will create greater page size issues for those with smaller monitors. I think they're good where they are.
  8.
Myself, I wish the images maxed out at a narrower width, but with less compression. I haven't seen any new photos that really do that yet, so I don't know if you've really accomplished it.
  9.
I was messing with an image which I had to compress before the switch... The extra 50k makes a difference, but another 50k would put things right on the sweet spot for me.
