OK, yes I know there are a dozen threads about this, and I have looked, at the websites, but cant really tell from my lookings. The frame seems to be either a MTB frame, or a touring frame, but cant put my finger on it. I looked the frame over and cant find any id codes or numbers. The only code I found was on the rear dropout that said YJ and the circled said SD. , maybe that is who made the frame and where it was made??
I will describe and attach a few photos here, I never built it up or anything, I have had it for almost 2yrs now, had it powdercoated and never ridden it after that. It has holes which look that could be for a basket, or fenders or panniers, but cant tell, also it looks to take linear brakes, or v-brakes

It also has holes on the underneath for another bottle holder, and as well on the headtube on the backside a holder for a pump, I hope this helps, and I will continue to browse the webs, and get some help here to!!
Thanks everyone... -

26" or 700c? I have no idea what model it is but its definitely got that cool cannondale look. I assume you dont have the fork? -

excellent question, I just checked that, and it fits both. it will fit 700c x 23 tires, so it will fit knobbys as well probably. and it will fit 26" x 2.10 tires perfect. it also has a 1" headtube to if that helps. I still cant find anything on this frame.
And no unfortunatly i do not have the orginal fork, wish I did. -

Check the brake post placement. Should be a dead giveaway as far as bike type. If not that, give us some measurements. Also, what color was it originally? -

Oh, also, try Vintage Cannondale if you haven't already. --Edit: You probably have.
Anyway, it looks mountain to me, all the way. It doesn't have those... I totally forget what they're called, but the cable guides in the down tube shifter position. -

I just checked for brake placement, it fits for 26", the measurements are 20"(51cm) seat tube, 23"(59cm) top tube. 25"(63cm) down tube.
As far as original color, it was already stripped and spray bombed when I got it, so I do not know. -

Is your derailleur hanger replaceable? It looks like it is, but it also doesn't look screwed on.... -
- CommentAuthorcyclecrazyjames
- CommentTimeSep 14th 2009
Yes it is replaceable, the one I got from a LBS gave me a shotty one, and the bolts are stripped out, so I just have it there for looks for now.
I found some models on their catalogs from vintage cannondale, looks similar to the M500 or M400, but cant tell if they have the water bottle holder on the downtube, and doesnt give the info for that either. -

It is pre 1993, for sure, because they started using non-integrated seatpost collars in 93.
OMG WE SHOULD CHAT OMG SO WE CAN TALK IN REAL TIME OMG. -

HAHA, yea im going through all the catalogs now, hoping to find something, maybe more people could chime in here, but so far your really the only one, and Wes... -

Ok, so: They didn't use replaceable hangers before 1990, but in 90 all the MTBs had a dimple in the chainstay for crank clearance. They phased out the integrated collar in 1993, sooooooo... You're looking at a mountain frame made in either 91 and 92. -

Why do you think the 400 or 500? What makes you think them specifically? The geometry and tubing is the same all around, both years.
Anyway, that's all I've got. At least you have some sense of it. -

- CommentTimeSep 14th 2009 edited
Well I look at those models specifically cause where the cable for the rear brake runs through, it has the housing right below the seatclamp area, but if you look at the difference between the M500 and M800, the 800 has an extra run through for the cable, where the 500 and 400 does not, and my model does not have that extra run through spot or clamp or whatever it is. -

But, another thing that my frame has that im not sure is on those models, is the extra water bottle holder underneath. I have heard of this Beast from the East frame, and thinking it could possibly be one of those frames, do you or have heard anything on those? -
- CommentAuthorsuicide_doors
- CommentTimeSep 14th 2009
Yeah, it would be really easy to figure out if it was an M800 (Beast of the East), the BB height would be 13" instead of ~11.5" -
- CommentAuthorcyclecrazyjames
- CommentTimeSep 14th 2009
well I dont think its one of those then, cause the rear cable housings are different between the M800 and M500. -

Apparently not. James, I'm disappointed.
I don't think you're going to be able to identify it to a T without some kind of serial number or other distinguishing mark. I'm just surprised we were able to date it as close as we have. -

yea, I will just try to sell it as one of those models, I have run through the frame altogether and cant find any markings besides the ones i said first, im pretty certain from what I have seen its either the 1992 M500 or M400, neat frames really, too big for me though, thanks for the help though. -

BTW.. I took a look-see at the 400 and 500.. The frames are identical. What makes the difference is the componentry that was originally installed. The M500 having better stuff on it of course. The difference in many of the Cannondales models (within a model type) is componentry and graphics. An SR600 and an SR800 for example will have the same frame with the 800 having higher grade components.
If you are really interested in finding your serno, I can help you, just drop me a pm. -

Yeah, and Vintage Cannondale tells you where the various places are they put the SNs. I'd look under the BB first, but maybe on the right chain stay underneath. -

Or the left chainstay or left seatstay.. It'll look like dot matrix impressions, not steel stampings. -

- CommentTimeSep 17th 2009
So, I am pretty much blind, and I looked at the frame again. Here are the serial numbers I found, and by going by the dating system it provides on vintage cannondale here it is.
52212907654::: which translates into 5-22-1290-7654, that was found on the inside of the left seatstay, I also found this on the right seat stay-- B1-0301
5= rear dropout spacing
22= frame size
1290= built in December, 1990
7654= sequence number
That is what I came up with from the info provided, -

I would palm you in the forehead if I could. You're selling it, then? -
- CommentAuthorcyclecrazyjames
- CommentTimeSep 17th 2009
I already palmed myself, so no need for someone else to do it. And yes Im selling it, I bought it on ebay, it was dirt cheap, and was just going to experiment with it, got it powdercoated real cheap(was done the right way), and its just way to big for me anyways, so just want it gone. I have had it for quite some time now, just collecting dust really. -

If there is a part number on the replaceable derailleur hanger you may be able to backtrack from there what frame is goes on. -
- CommentAuthorcyclecrazyjames
- CommentTimeSep 18th 2009
No there isnt any part number on the replaceable der hanger.
Yea I was going to do a 69er project on it, with a 700c cyclocross steel fork for it, had it all together except for the wheels, but just never got to finishing it, then sold or gave the parts away, and lost the interest in it... but it would look good as a cruiser or whatever to someone.
