i have started hearing a popping sound as i pedal the last few days and i'm not sure what it is.. it occurs in the same spot as i pedal and i can actually feel it in my feet. possibly a bottom bracket problem? please forgive my newness to this.

You should ask these two jackasses:

    Make the sound for us!

P.S. I don't know, based on your description it could be anything. Make sure things are tight (chainring, pedals, cog, lockring, etc). A shop can diagnose this in no time.

The bottom bracket is the best bet but it really could be any drivetrain component.

depending on the clicking it could be a defective bearing in the pedal. you wont be able to tell just spinning the pedal but with weight on it ive seen this a few times with defective pedals that come into the shop but it could be something else too

I am almost 99% sure that you have a loose bolt in your pedal, the bottom bracket wouldnt create enough play for you to feel it (and if it does then you may need a new frame not a new bb). Tighten all the bolts in your pedal then lube em up.

A friend of mine had a similar sounding problem, his problem turned out to be the lockring was loose and cog was not tight. tightened it and it was fixed

In my experience you can feel play in non cartridge bottom brackets that have fallen out of tune.

That's totally a bottom bracket thing. Ideally, you need to tighten everything up (or perhaps replace the BB). Watch carefully as you do it, though: you might have a cracked shell, which would require some heavy duty repair or frame replacement.

I know what you mean, but the play that I felt in those bb's never involved a popping noise.

Alright, I've got this problem too. It sounds like it's the BB, but there is no play at the pedals. It only happens when I stand up on the pedals and crank. My BB is an Origen8 propulsion...plan? I'm assuming it's sealed so how do I inspect it?

Not sure if this is the case or not, but I've had similar experiences with popping noises caused by the chain binding in spots due to running the chain too tight. What's your chain tension like?

im telling you guys take any other set of pedals and try it, it will solve your problem. unless you have a serious catastrophic problem like missing or smashed barrings in your bb or it popping over threads nothing in there would really click

sfbee, i am currently shopping for a new chainring to replace the biopace that i have now. with the biopace, as i'm sure you know, the tension changes. i am hoping that this will solve the problem. if that doesn't work, i guess i will try out the pedals. thanks guys.

there you go, its probably binding at the tight spots. loosen your chain and see if it helps.
