Do you guys have that one tube that lasts you for like six months or whatever? It just never seems to flat? And then you get another tube and it flats three times in a week! Tubes are amysterious force in our world, and we truly don't understand them. In fact, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do the behavior of the 700x23c 48mm valve Specialized intertubes (those are the ones I use).

Man, no matter how strict a manufacturer's specifications for tubes are, two of the same won't perform the same way.Posted By: RideEverydayIn fact, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do ...

I been using Continetal Race Light tubes for years, and never much problem. Their tubes are manufactured at a very high quality standard, and they very rarely will be any slight differences in the tube thickness (maybe only 1-3 grams weight difference between tubes). However, often times when you replace a tube, maybe you are putting the new one in and it's getting pinched. Or maybe, the first one went flat because your rim tape moved and part of a spoke hole is exposed, which is causing all the others to go flat.
I NEVER change a tube without knowing 100% what caused the one before to go flat. There is always a reason, and you have to find it.
Also, when I put a new tube it, I coat the whole tube with foot powder (or some type of powder), to prevent it from sticking to the rim or tire. It prevents pinch flats. -

I went 2 years without getting a single flat bad enough to justify patching the tube mid ride. I got some slow leaks but nothing that ever stopped me mid ride. 2 weeks ago I got 4 flats on the road within 24 hours on 2 different bikes. Tubes are nutty. -

A flat tube is the result of an issue with the rim or tire, which is not to say one should buy shitty tubes. Though in my experience I have found that 26'' tubes are much more forgiving then 700c (which makes sense).
Generally I buy the 4 dollar kenda tubes at the lbs. Facts are that the one time I did spring for the lightweight tubes one popped mysteriously overnight and the other developed a slow leak at the valve.
Part of me thinks they are built to fail like 1st gen ipods and xbox 360 (xbox failure rate of 54%). -

cheapo kenda tubes ftw
& I currently ride on tubes that are about a year old. they've been patched 2-3 times each & still riding strong.

My front and rear tubes have lasted for about 6 months. No flats, no patches, no leaks...nothing. It's wonderful but I always wonder, is there a certain about of time that you should go without getting a new tube? Should we only use tubes in a tire for a month, 3 months? Is a year on one tube ok?
tubes....
why are you so mysterious? -

It's not like there is much damage to be done using a tube until it dies. I have a couple with 4+ patches at the moment. Speaking of which, I need more patches... -

That shouldn't happen period. throw some talcum powder on your tube before you throw it in or buy a pre talc'd tube. Then learn how to change a tire -

Uhh... you are aware that there are things that cause flat tubes other than improper installation.... right? Road debris... -

I've been doing that for a few years. It works exactly the same as tire talc, it's purchaseable anywhere (as opposed to mail oreder only), it's available in smaller quantities, and it's usually cheaper. Plus, it smells better...
