I have 6 bikes, 3 of which I will ride. The other three I don't ride are ridden by anybody since they were given to me and are not my size. I feel like I have too many bikes and wanted to know should I feel this way judging by the average amout of bikes users have on this forum. If I donated some bikes where would be a good home for them? -

... I suppose it would be redundant by now, me giving you shit about how you phrase your posts.
There is no reason to have more bikes than you actually ride unless you think mounting one on the wall is cool (it's really not), or have some sort of compulsive collecting disorder (see Dustin, tbrownell, etc). I currently own four, one of which is going on the auction block for lack of use. Two are ridden at least three times a week, and the fourth is in pieces, not to mention a total piece of shit.
As far as donations go, I'll let all the SFO fuckers here take that. Or you could sell them. -

I think donating the bikes that don't fit you is a fine idea. But even if you keep all 6 bikes, don't sweat it. People have asked this same question over at bikeforums.net. In the classic & vintage sub-forum I read, the magic number seems to be around 10. That's the tipping point beyond which it becomes likely a spouse will file for divorce. So, while 6 may sound like a lot, just know that it's not. -

6 bikes, and not a single one uploaded.
gridplan, really 10 bikes? Shit, they must not live in an apartment. I would have to hang some off my porch to fit that many. I struggle fitting 4 complete bikes and 2 frames, which is besides the constant bickering I receive from my fiance that bikes (as pretty as they are to me) are not wall art to her. She says it makes the apartment look 'college'.
1 is truly enough. Most of us on here are just overcompensating to try and achieve an undeserved sense of self accomplishment.
But then there are the people that turn 3 bikes into one, they deserve a sense of accomplishment. -

HAHA, Glad to know Im thought of here, but yea your right, Im addicted to bikes and I was obsessed at one time, I currently have 3 bikes that I ride, My orbea, my specialized and my colnago that isnt built yet for my road bike. I do have my uno njs that is hanging up in the house(trying to sell), I also have a matching set of 70's beach cruisers in almost mint condition, those Im saving for when I get someone to ride with someday. Oh and my cannondale beast fromt the east frame that I got powdercoated that I have been slowly trying to put together, but trying to sell that as well.
But if you look at my profile, you will notice after each bike name that says GONE, that means its gone, out of my life, and only a few remain here, the ones I only need.
So in the end, I have come to realazation that I dont need all that crap, and only need what I ride, which is the 3 bikes, which I dont even need the 3, only 2. -

I have:
a track bike
a fixed/free MTB
a "trekking" bike (touring/hard-packed trails)
a cruiser
a BMX
a lowrider
a burrito bike
a tallbike (I gave one away)
a chopper
Most of my bikes have different purposes, even if the purpose is to be weird or ridiculous.
I am trying to pare down, the trekking bike may go on the chopping block, although it is my only practical multi-speed bike. I doesn't do anything my track bike and my fixed/free MTB can't do. I did get rid of one of my tallbikes because it was redundant. The lowrider bike is essentially useless, but it's really hard to get money out of something like that with all the time into the custom frame/bodywork on it. The cruiser may become a Whizzer (motorized bicycle) in the near future so that's technically one less bicycle. The chopper is being donated as a prize for an upcoming event. I'd still have 5 bikes, I can only ride one at a time. -

Interesting question although it depends on the riding you do. LyKqiD, I don't know how you would be able to only have one bike unless all the riding you do is the same.. That being said my stable includes:
1 loaded touring bike (Bridgestone)- racks, panniers, fenders etc\
1 road bike (Colnago)
1 criterium bike (Cannondale)
1 mountain bike (Schwinn)
1 cyclo cross (Specialized) for running the gravel roads and trails here in the midwest
N + 1 Light touring bike (Cannondale) in the build phase
N + 2 the dream bike that I'll always be looking for (Woodrup Giro Touring)
So... each one is for a different type riding. Not one of them could be configured to do it all, but I could possibly get down to 3 (road, mtb, touring). Kinda like your kids, which one would you get rid of? BUT to answer your question, I wouldn't have a bike around that doesn't fit me, so you could drop a few right now and pick up another that fits.. -

Four of mine own, all with different reasons to be:
City beater (Jamis Quest)
Mountain/cargo (Schwinn Sierra)
Road (Schwinn Super Sport)
Tourer (Trek TX700)
Plus three bikes I built up and hold on to for others:
Tourer (Trek 520)
City beater (Schwinn Panther)
Road (LeMond Buenos Aires)
I have basement storage, so that helps -- or hurts, depending on how you look at it. -

Yeah, that's true. Most of the vintage bike collectors I know are older (like me) and haven't lived in an apartment for many, many years. The 10 bike 'rule' assumes you live in a house. I suspect your fiancée will cut you some slack on the bike count if/when you two move into a bigger place. -

6 at the moment, BUT, i just moved from a house with a sweet garage, ideal for storing bikes, to a house with a sweet deck.... less awesome for storing bikes, so i am trying to sell stuff off. What i am keeping is a fixed for tooling around on, my nice road bike for long rides or times when i wont have to lock it up, and a commuter/rain bike. All in all, i am finding that a reasonable number of bikes to own depends on how much space you have dedicated to storing them. -

Track bike (Spicer)
CX bike (Kona)
Single speed MTB (Bianchi)
Full suspension MTB (Specialized)
Tandem (Schwinn)
all but the Schwinn tandem are aluminum.
My current wish list: I'd like to get a light steel italian road frame with modern parts on it, a BMX, a cruiser, and a grocery getter trike for kicks -

I think I've got five, though frankly few are in full working condition right now. The old Trek 6500 is decked out for snow 'n' ice, which kept me sane all last winter, and Tyger Tyger is what I get around on most of the time these days. I'm darn proud of that build. I needed to scavenge a saddle, though, since I broke the previous one in a wipeout that did in the frame on Jet Jaguar. -

Through this post I suddenly realize we have too many:
GF
Giant Speeder Road bike (tourer)
Old Dutch (commuter)
So she is basically fine, but wants the Old Dutch replaced by a hybryd or MTB for commuting.
Son
Peugeot 100 (tourer and commuter)
Some kind of flatland BMX
So he needs a better tourer and demote the Peugeot to commuter status.
Me
Wilier Road bike (tourer)
Koga Miyata Gents Racer Road (tourer)
Koga Miyata Whatever Road Beater
Giant Hybryd (beater commuter)
I need to ditch the Koga's. They're in the kitchen and really that space could really be used for a dishwasher. -

I've got 4.65 bikes at the moment:
a.) 1979 Trek 530 fixed-gear conversion
I went a little over the top with parts on this frame with the thought that I beat the frame to death and pick up a better one later on. It's ended up being a really comfortable ride, which I actually favor using over my more modern road bike on my lengthy commutes. I plan on throwing racks on it soon, and using it for some significantly longer rides through texas hill country.
b.) IRO Angus
I bought this frame new from a guy on here at a good price. I had intended on moving the parts over to it from the aforementioned trek, but never did because I enjoy the trek too much as it is. I picked up a separate set of components of it instead (being short just a bottom bracket), and plan on building it up in the near future.
c.) Trek 2100zr
My nicer, geared road bike. I got this bike a few years back for below cost from a friend who used to work at a local shop. Everything but the cranks and cassette are stock, with the exception of parts replaced during routine maintenance. I've put a ton of miles on it, and love it.
d.) 1981 Benotto modelo 1000
I bought this for my man-wife from a guy on craigslist for 80 bucks. He wasn't a cyclist, and he had picked it up for nothing while cleaning out someones estate. Unfortunately it's way too small for me and way too big for the man-wife. I decided to keep it around for a friend whom it would fit perfectly, not to mention it's pretty to look at.
d.) ciocc project bike
A free find on craigslist. It came with everything short of the seat post and saddle. Unfortunately the headset and bottom bracket were shot and need replacing. It came with some tubular wolber to super record wheels with bladed hoshi spokes. I tried overhauling the front wheel myself, which was successful with the exception of some issues with the threads on the right handle side of the axle, so I'm hunting down a replacement for that. The rear wheel has a stuck freewheel that neither I nor a three man effort at a local shop could get off. I plan on putting it back together soon with the rest of the original parts (most of which are polished to a mirror finish now), and tossing on the wheels from my benotto instead.
I've been itching lately to pick up a mountain bike. My daily commute takes me through a park with some great trails that I would love to get filthy in on the way to work. I've also been itching to get a full-blown geared touring bike for some lengthy rides through out Texas, but I've been acting responsibly lately in an effort to purchase a house instead. :( -

I have only had one bicycle since the early 1980s: a 1977 Schwinn Sportabout (a Chicago-built Schwinn "Varsinental" with Japanese derailleurs). This is the "Minstrel Cycle" of The Bicycling Guitarist, on which I've ridden tens of thousands of miles while playing guitar at the same time. I've used the same guitar since the late 1980s: a 1979 Silver Anniversary Fender Stratocaster. Before that I rode with a Korean made Strat copy that was destroyed when auditioning a new drummer in the late 1980s. I have only had one bicycle and one guitar at a time all this time, and when or if they break I will be up shit creek.
My guitar gets more and more weatherbeaten over the years but still stays in tune and sounds sweet. The Schwinn on the other hand has had many parts replaced or upgraded. The latest change is from Schwinn S-6 steel rims to Sun CR-18 aluminum rims. The new wheels still use vintage Schwinn approved quick release hubs. -

I made my brother something that's either a "Sierrurban" or a "Subierra" -- it's the frame of an early '80s Sierra with a lot of the components off a late '70s Suburban. City bike with way-relaxed geometry and 26" wheels. Looks pretty good; just need to figure out what to call it. -

Total? 8. Riding? 4:- 1993 Marin Bobcat Trail (AKA The Pack Mule; not yet posted to vs) - this is the beater I've been riding around since early '06. Until the beginning of '09, it was my only bike and I used it for everything from hauling groceries to long (25 mile) rides. I've put about 3000 miles on it since I got it. But since February, it's been retired to grocery-hauling duties (and not always then), as it's been almost completely replaced by these:
- 1999 VooDoo Hoodoo (AKA The Alleycat) - my first completed build is a CX-ish Frankenbike, made from a mountain frame witha rigid 700c fork and cyclocross wheels. I don't go offroad much (although I'd like to try more); right now, it's used for scrambling around through traffic. I've put about 750 miles on it this year.
- 1988 unidentified Bianchi, probably a Superleggera (AKA Celeste the Greyhound) - the "period" build, it was an exercise for my historical research imstincts. It's basically used as a townie bike, but I've done 30 miles on it at a stretch - pretty much the longest route I do at the moment. I've put over 1000 miles on it since I built it up in February; it's a 'greater comfort' alternative to the much faster:
- 2006 Fuji Roubaix SL (AKA Instrument of Punishment) - my first aluminum bike, and my first indexed road bike. I got the frameset as a freebie when I bought the crankset off CL, and I reassembled the bike with a Centaur gruppo replacing the stock Ultegra. Crit geometry; rough, and a little twitchy. I've been using it for the longer routes (20-30 miles), but only for exercise, as I haven't been putting temporary racks on it for lock-carrying, and Kryptonites in a messenger bag really discourages exercise. About 500 miles since I built it up at the end of July.
There are other projects underway. In order of proximity/likelihood of completion:- 1971 Raleigh International - this is a bike I've been looking for since I started riding again four years ago; it replaces a much-beloved '73 International I rode around in high school and college, until it was stolen in 1983. I didn't ride for over 20 years afterward, I was so heartbroken. I originally imagined this as a period bike, all Nuovo Record; but the Bianchi fills that role. I'm building it up as a loaded tourer, with mostly French parts. It's very nearly finished; I'll try to get some placeholder photos up this week.
- late '70s Bertin (AKA A potentially serious error in judgement) - I got this to strip the TA crankset off for the International, but the frame seems to be sounder than I thought. I got another English-threaded TA crankset for the International, so now I'm thinking I'm going to convert this to a 650b.
- 2001 Marin Treviso - another Craigslist freebie, it's an elegant, lightweight Italian frame with oversized Columbus tubes. Unfortunately, there's a crack in the downtube. Nova Cycles is trying to get me an equivalent oversized tube, then I'll get Bernie Mikkelsen to TIG-weld it in and powerdercoat. I still have to haul the frame up to Novato, to see if Marin will either give/sell me decals or give me the Illustrator files; their tech support doesn't seem to answer their email).
- 1999 Novara Alance - an aluminum cross/hybrid frame I won in a raffle at a swap last year. It's unused/unbuilt, a very nice dark green, but I have no need for it. I've been dragging it to swaps all summer trying to sell the thing. If all the other projects get completed, I may break down and build it up to see if anyone wants it as a full bike. Eccch...
(Project Boy is a perfectionist) -
