After seeing a discussion of what hipster is, there seems to be some common consensus. I was at Berkeley today, the place with the UC. It seems like that place is just spawning hipsters. Urban area, kids in skinny jeans, plastic frame glasses, trucker hats bags,... They have bike shops specifically catering to fixed. They'd have frames hanging out for window shoppers. Since a common definition is defined, where are places to go to avoid hipsters and places to go to watch them in their natural environments?

These dudes at that Davis school made this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3hhKVxOkSE

    On another note: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipster_PDA

    that's what I call ghetto

You're on my turf now, and to quote wes, I call shenanigans on that. All eleven of the bike stores in Berkeley have fixed-speed bikes - a LOT of fixed-speed bikes. But there is no specifically fixed-speed shop in Berkeley, unlike the several fixed-speed shops in SF. The closest fixed-speed exclusive shop to Berkeley is Manifesto Oakland, about two miles south of Berkeley in the Temescal area of North Oakland.

Boise is sprawling with these so called hipsters. plenty of aerospokes and pabst blue ribbon..not to mention dudes in skinny jeans smashed on cocain. This is just a trend (except for the coke) and soon there will be something else to fit into. Personally, i would rather have it be a trend to ride fixies and pretend we are back in the renaissance than have white kids in baggy jeans wearing tall tees and fidy caps..
  11.
Actually, the primary distinguishing feature of a hipster is that they spend all their time calling other people hipsters.

It's the age of the internet. Anyone can be cool. You used to have to trek to a big city and go to the cool places, and rely on 'zines and magazines to find out what was cool but you were always about 3 month behind. Places like Boise (pretty much anywhere that wasn't Boston, NYC, LA, SF, Philly, and maybe Austin) were full of rednecks or "townies" and that's about it.

These days anyone can get on the internet and look around, decide what they like, and become whatever genre or subculture they are interested in. In some ways that's good and in other ways it's bad.

I think for the most part it's good.

ahhh phenomenon known as TV hipsters. picking it up on TV etc, like you said. having just recently (and thankfully) after 7 years moved out of the epicenter of all things hipster (williamsburg) you get used to flyover state kids moving in. now call me an old hipster or whatever like any other dude is but its funny watching these kids forgetting their from the suburbs, denouncing conservative upbringings, and worshiping at the alter of cool like they popped out of their mothers wombs like that. you dont have to jam it all in in a week. take your time. its cool. i dunno. im old. i moved. hey kids get off my lawn

Thank you Joshua, EXACTLY. I wear tight jeans and ride a 'fake' track (road geometry). Feel free to hate me, but seriously- who cares? Calling people 'hipster' is exactly the same as when I was really into punk rock and everybody trying to defend their own coolness called everyone else a 'poseur'.

Some people want as many people to ride bikes as possible, some people want as few people as possible (other than themselves) to ride bikes. I prefer to have sex rather than masturbate, but that's just me.
  14.
I want everyone to ride bikes and get along. I dont care what people wear, music they listen to, how they build their bikes, what colors they choose, wether they are racing, or at the tennis courts doing wheelies or spin tricks or whatever you call that stuff...

I suppose its just that damn tough for everyone to get along and respect everyone(what a shitty world we live in I guess)

I respect everyone, especially people who ride bikes(everyone). Ride on, and be safe,,,, isnt that whats it all about!!!

I was at the top of telegraph once after a pursuit from Oakland, and this faggot on a leader with a white arrosp0k asked me if I wanted to "Scrape" down telegraph against traffic to the skateboard shop. I said no, and he acknowledged me as if I were a pussy and rode away.

There's a difference between stupidity, and having fun/being curtious to others...
