Im looking for a sturdy set of fixed gear wheels. They need to have machined side walls and i would love to have all black. Its for a 2008 Schwinn Madison and i just ride around Seattle with it. I would appreciate any opinion and im looking to spend $200 at most...but mabey a little more if its a killer deal. Thanks!

If I was getting new wheel's, I'd choose one of these

Mavic Open Pro, Velocity Aerohead, Suntour Superbe Pro. I like durace hubs personally, but it's up to you ;)

    yes, made for brakes
  4.
mavic ellipses are not made for a braking surface. You cannot run brakes on the sidewalls!!!

If you are putting around town then weinmann dp18's are more then you will need. Now if you have some people to impress then you might want to spend double that velocity deep v's.

    They ARE machined.

The machined braking surface is anodized since they are intended for track use, but they're also made to be road training wheels. It'll wear off if you brake on them.

And machined sidewalls isn't what makes a brakeable rim breakable; it just makes braking a little more consistent. Prior to the mid-80s, there were no machined rims. How did all them road-racer guys manage to stop their bikes in the 60 years between the adoption of rim brakes and the adoption of sidewall machining?

I have a set of mid-80s Ambrosio Super Elites that came off a period Colnago. Anodized; not machined; the anodizing is set into the metal. You hit the brakes; the anodizing eventually wears through. It's ugly, and it works.

Paint, though...generally not encouraged as a braking surface, presumably because the heat and pressure of rim braking is likely to bring off the paint in sheets, which might cause scary slips. Thqat's my big limiting factor on getting the fancy-schmancy Velocity bassboat rims.

They make brake pads that wont wear off the anodized surface

That's a useful bit of information. Who makes them?

To say nothing of SantaBot, and his annual Xmas Eve killing spree...

That's funny, I was about to use Chanukah Zombie as the second example. But I figured no one would get it.

I'll fit Coolio into something on here.
