i want to build my gt tequesta into a single speed but have a question. i don't know if it would be a good candidate for converting. i don't know if it is a good enough frame to invest the time and money it would take to convert it. i dont know a lot about it, i cant find out the year or much about the parts. so if you guys know something please tell me.
thanks
and it has verticle drop outs so i know i will need a Chain Tensioner -

They arent the best mountain bike from the GT line, but ask anyone and they will tell you these frames will last a lifetime. Its seems a lot of them are seeing a second life as a single speed, I think the early 90's models had horizontal drop outs though, and thats the one I am seeing resurrected a lot. -

If it's chromoly I say go for it.
Sometimes you can find a "magic gear" a chainring/cog combination that will work with that length of chainstay.

Wait a second... you had recently made a post asking what $1,600.00 dollar track frame you should buy, and you had your mind set on a certain frame. Now, you are wanting to invest your money in converting over some crappy mountain bike that would not even make a very good conversion? Hmmmm... -

I think it would be a good candidate for singlespeed MTB conversion, a porteur bike, a commuter, or a polo bike. -

You're all good to convert it, especially since it's a steel frame.
From the photo you put up, I think it's a '95. -

its a steel frame and it says gt cromo tubing and it has verticle drops .and fuck you to49 its my money and i will dispose of it how i want . i still want to get it but other bikes and stuff has come my way and so i got that stuff first. and thanks for the advice you guys i think i will convert it when i know what parts i want to buy and i have the time to do it . -

Whow buddy, calm down okay. No need to be telling me to fuck myself. Geez. I was just wondering how you go from buying a $1,600.00 track frame...to converting an old mountain bike. -

my aunt bought it at a thrift store and had it in her garage for a few months and she wasnt riding it so i asked her if i could have it and do somthing with it. so she said yes and so i got it for free.and i have wanted a ss mtb for a while so thats why i want to convert it. -

Id say convert, and like skidmark said, you can sometimes find that magic gear and not have to use the tensioner, or maybe you can find a eno hub cheap enough, those hubs are great(I have one!!) GL on your build!! -

i know i could find a magic gear but i dont feel like playing around with it right now. do you think i should put a rigid 29er front wheel and fork on? i would like to try that but dont want to screw up the geo to much . -

Putting that size wheel on would make the geo retarded. -

That all depends on the geo, I know they make 69er specific frames, but I do know some people who have done their own 69er project from a 26er frame, and it turned out just fine... Id say try it, and see how it works, it might just be perfect.. -

Especially since the bike wasn't designed for a suspension fork in the first place. My 69er works well enough, but the frame was designed for an 80mm fork and my mod only adds about an inch to that. You're looking at adding 1.5" to your wheel radius, plus the increased fork length. BTW if you do try, DON'T buy a 29er fork, buy a suspension corrected 26" fork or find something that gives you JUST enough clearance for the wheel and tire.
If you're looking to monkey with it more than just a SS conversion, I suppose you could try to throw some 700c road wheels on. You probably have enough clearance and it might be an interesting thing to try. On roads, that is. -

i just looked at it when it was raised about 3-4 inches and it dosent look to jacked up. i think i might do that when i convert it. i havent looked for any forks so do you guys know of any rigid 29er forks that are good and dont simulate having a 100mm travel fork so i dont have to raise it any more than i have too. -
- CommentAuthorcarbon fiber15
- CommentTimeAug 29th 2009
it will work with my 700c wheel with 35c tires but i will have to get longer reach brakes or some kind of problem solver type deal.but its a cool idea, i will think about it . and i didnt see s.d comment so thats why it sounds like i completly ingnored you -

White Brothers, Kelly, Kona, etc, etc. Like I said before, 26" forks with correction will work as well. All you have to do is figure out the axle to crown radius you'll need.
An eBay search I just cooked up: (rigid fork, kelly fork, kona project) -bmx
Really the only issues you will have with the conversion are pedal clearance and increased twitch when steering. -
- CommentAuthorcarbon fiber15
- CommentTimeAug 29th 2009
ok thanks for the link, i might just do that. and clearance wont be a problem(i gots lots of it) and it rides like a tank so a little twitch might be nice -

Paul makes Moto BMX linear brakes which will do exactly that, clear 700c wheels on a 26" frame (as well as several other things). I just sold a used one on eBay for $80, so not cheap. They're the only solution to that problem I know of.
That reminds me, if you do buy a 26" fork, you will have to use a disc brake. A 29" fork will work with post brakes, but the fork itself may end up costing more. -

i know, thats another barrier ill need to break.
about 2 hours ago my freind was so nice, he took my gt out and put a hole in my tire and tube. and i dont have a spare at this time. so i put my 700c wheel in it and went out to ride. and i found out that i dont like the way it rides in sprints.it feels like the front wheel is about to fall off, but its tight as can be. so i guess that i dont want a 69er any more. but thanks for entertaining the idea -

All you have to do is measure the chainstay and use the cog and chainring recommended on the Fixmeup! site. That's what that web address is. -

Tarzan has no need for silly road tires. Assuming your rear triangle permits it (and you're using a CX/hybrid fork), cyclocross tires will work.Posted By: suicide_doorsPaul makes Moto BMX linear brakes which will do exactly that, clear 700c wheels on a 26" frame (as well as several other things).
My experience with that didn't work out so well. You have to move the pads really far up on the arms, and it's hard to get enough pull on the lever to brake solidly. I ended up using a Mavic Caliper Adjuster, which gives you a set of V-brake bosses in 700c position. The drawback of them (aside from being hard to find; SpeedGoat has them backordered) is that they really don't have clearance for anything bigger than a 700x32. They're also a bit flexy - good enough for the rear, but I'd rather have a 700 CX fork in front.
Which I do, in carbon, off eBay; $55 including shipping. Steel ones are a lot cheaper than carbon, no matter what your shopping venue. Bikeman has Kona Project 2 forks for $60 new; Niagara Cycle Works is selling the Redline Conquest canti+disc fork for $80.
CF15, I'm not surprised you're a little skeeved by a straight 700c replacement, when you've done nothing else to adjust for it. If you replace the rear wheel, you'll get a funny-bike effect on a frame that's really not designed for it. If you replace the front, you're squeezing the wheel into a strange fork, which may give you less-than comforting braking. You really have to commit to the project, and do some major changes. But doing a full 700c swap makes a pretty fun ride, if the frame will allow you to do it safely. -

the frame will clear a 35c but the brakes dont fit. there about a inch too short. i think i will just use 26er stuff for now. i have got the rest of my life to change it if i ever do. -

when he's asking questions such as "what is the best" or "what should i do for myself", it's pretty obvious that he needs to put in some more independent thought. questions that display any amount of prerequisite thought at all will be much more welcomed. -

i have researched for a while, and found 2 helpful sites that tell a little about materials and prices of my bike. but the lack of pics has made it hard to pinpoint a year. and i had never done a 69 before so i thought why ask the regulars on here and see what they say. i decided that i would try using my 700c wheel on the front since a 29er is just a big 700c wheel. i went out for a ride then came to the conclusion that i dont like the way if feels at higher speeds when im out of the saddle,or going down hills. so i think that i have done a little figuring out for my self. maby not a whole lot but as much as i think i can. -
