I inherited a 1987 Eddy Merckx Titanium all Campagnolo Record. This was one of a dozen bikes my brother left when he died. I have this one and 2 others hanging on the wall at home.
I am considering riding it but am uncertain of its value. If its only worth $2-3000 I may ride it. More and I think I'll just leave it up and buy something else to ride.
It is all titanium, even the seat stays. Carbon fiber seat. Not even any oil on the chain.Virtually perfect. A bike shop, after looking up the serial # said it was about $4500 out of the box in '87.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions. My neighbor was over the other nite who is also looking for a new bike... I think he wanted to kill me for it.

    Thanks

    Hank
  1.
sorry to hear about your brother..
i'm not sure of the value but would love to see some pictures
    - sounds like it would be worth a few thousand - depends on who wants it and what theyre willing to pay.
    cheers
    J

Well my opinion is, the bike is only worth what someone else will pay for it(just like vintage cars), wether that may be 1k or 4k. If it was mine and in mint condition, I would put it up and ride something else. I also would love to see pics of this beaut!!!

i have no idea of the price but post some pics

I did this on a spare moment at work .... I will get some pics up as soon as I can as well as the other 2 70's style bikes hanging up if anyone is interested.
Thanks for the comments..... Seems to me (not knowing crap) there are very few bikes that fetch much in terms of being a collectors item.

Why would value of the bike stop you from riding it?!
Just make sure you use good lock if you have to leave it outdoor.

There is no one else that deserve better bike then You (or me, or anyone else...).
I think (as long as you can ride it) the bike place is not on the wall. Ride it... It's all about riding. Get the best one you can afford and enjoy riding.

the value will go up as the economy climbs. its probably worth a cool 2500 or so right now. but give it a few years and i bet you can fetch 4-4500, in unridden shape.
  4.
what size is it, that is if you want to sell it
  5.
Yeah, ride something else. That is a racing machine designed for a very serious professional, it would be wasted doing anything beside racing. I agree with Otto, once the economy stabilizes you will be able to sell it for, at worst, a little less than the original sale price. What happened to rest of the bikes? I would be curious to know what else he had in his stable.

My brother had about 12 bikes... some ridden a little. I have 2 other custom 70's vintage ... one orange and seems modeled after Merckx bike it his poster I have. I framed a Merckx poster he sighned to my brother.. If anyone is interested I'd be glad to post some pics of those 2 bikes and poster....
the others went here and there.... Gurciotti (?sp) DeLaRosa, etc.... DeLarosa still in the family somewhere. Gurciotti was amazing and sold to a bike shop for $1400 .... sad but not mine.
I posted merckx pics but darned if I can find them.... 50000 bikes here.
  6.
Absolutely. I'm sure many more than I would like to see photos.

Got here: velospace.org/upload and follow the instructions. The page mentions this, but keep in mind that your photos need to meet specific size requirements in order to be accepted. What it does not mention is that the image filenames should be unique so as to not confuse the system (ie: "bike1.jpg" is way too common, while "1987_merckx_ti.jpg" is much less likely to be a name duplicated by another user).
You will create a bike entry on the site which can be seen by anyone who clicks on your username. You don't have to bother detailing the specific parts of the bike if you don't know them, but try to give some description. Feel free to look at others bikes for reference.
  8.
OH GOD WHY HAVEN'T YOU PUT UP PICTURES YET WHO DO I HAVE TO GO DOWN ON TO SEE THIS BIKE
  9.
I forgot. What do you want pictures of?

I'd say in the $3000-$4000 range. If your brother thought it important enough of a bike not to ride, let alone sell......you shouldn't either.

But, if you have to......screen your buyers tough. You want a bicycle like that going to someone who really loves the sport and will enjoy it as much as your brother obviously did. Good luck.

I want pics of Hank's bike!
