Anybody see the NBC Universal Sports commercial with a montage with many sports? Everytime cycling shows up they show some dude riding really fast and fall down each time, I counted 3 times cycling showed up; time trial, triathlon, and road. It implies cycling is not an interesting enough of a sport and it not confrontational enough that it's only fun to watch when the cyclist confronts the ground. It really mak -

I've noticed that too, it's like that on VS. as well.
Watching someone like Cavendish sprint at the finish line is pretty damn exciting, he looks like an animal sometimes. Matched sprints at the track get pretty damn close with the riders bumping elbows. There are plenty of opportunities to show the excite of cycling without showing crashes.
At the same time if you see a promo for NASCAR it will be about half crashes, so maybe that's just what marketers think, that people only tune in to see crashes. -

I completely understand it. The commercials arent directed towards cyclists, they are just trying to sensationalize the sports on their channel. 90% of people would rather see a bike crash than a sprint finish.
I feel the same way about fishing shows. If I'm forced to watch a fishing show there better be a friggin swordfish impaling someone. -

While on the subject, sports center only shows plays from the big 3 sports (football, baseball, and basketball)... In order for any other sport to make it to the top 10 plays, it would required some godly greatness.
Sports like cycling, track, soccer, (and the list goes on) never get any attention. I mean how many times am I going to have to see an outfielder go full stretch as a top play.
Now that I got that rant out...
You can be too disappointed with VS or NBC, and c'mon wes we didnt sensationalize Steve Irwins death. -

Sounds like Nascar, I only watch it to see em crash. If they don't care, they don't care. -

but only when cycling was shown, the athletes fail. Nascar is different, they drive around a track a bunch of times really fast and that leaves a greater chance of an explosion or crash, which means there are fans of racing in Nascar and there are those that just wait for that chance of a crash and scream in excitment. But in the commercial i saw, riders just fell down and didn't crash into anybody but the ground. -

but nobody was forced to watch a cycling show, so they shouldn't and wouldn't need to appeal to people that way. -

Well, they are sort of forced to watch the commercial because its between two segments of a show they want to watch. Maybe I should have said fishing commercial. -

........look, these media moguls aren't stupid. They know what sells. News flash kids: Target audience= Fat over-wieght weekend warriors with 2 kids and a wife in tow commonly seen on your local converted, paved 2% railroad grade trail who, after a long day at some corporate job in the city come home at night and plop willingly in front of their 42" flat screen and catch the replay of their favorite sport. NOT Target audience= Real riders who bust ass day in and day out....riders who know each and every hill in their area because they've climbed 'em....riders who know what it takes to be a good cyclist and how hard it is to be at the top of your game....riders who know the difference between Tor Huschov and Franco Pelizotti.......riders that ride in the rain and like it.........etc..... -

that is VERY true. if it bleeds it leads. Media caters to the mainstream, not the niche who actually know what the hell they are doing. It make sense from a business standpoint. It's all about ratings and ad revenue. -

I think cycling coverage would get better if the cyclists were allowed to impale each other with swordfish.
