as far as i am aware there is no real internet database to figure out a frame model/builder by the serial no. alone.

you could type it in, but there would be MAJOR barriers to tracking down serial numbers from the oodles of manufacturers out there. and one particular number could be used by 10 different builders. it's utterly impossible, but a good idea. velobase is the closest thing

go to google and type it in then put bike next to it and see what comes up....nothing, but its worth a try

bike shops are the best help sometimes. often times you can also find online catalogues
  7.
yeah not in shitty fresno all the lbs here have incompetent asshole running them and start bitcheng at people when you bring a track bike in its like wtf
  8.
A lot of shops have contempt for kids riding fixed. Actually, a lot of track riders have contempt for kids riding fixed. I bet if you punctuated your sentences they would be nicer...?

some of my bike shops wont even email me back or they get real snotty if i talk to them in person about fixed gear.

My lbs and most shops in the general area like the fixed trend. They are raking in the dough. The owner at my lbs rides a fixed crosscheck. Half the people at the local mtb shop commute fixed. Downtown we have a shop that was going broke before the hipster scene floated over from SF. Now you cant even pass the shop without seeing a couple kids on bikes out front of it. There are a few serious business road racing shops in the area that I would suspect might look down their noses but they are in the minority.

I will practically guarantee that the shops in your guys' towns dont look down on people just for riding fixed. Its more of an anti-hipster thing than it is an anti-fixed thing. Think of velospace threads as questions/comments you would get in a bike shop. Sometimes you get people asking how to make their bikes more barspinnable, saying that helmets increase the likelihood of head trauma, and annoying you about how to make bikes color coordinate. Enough days of that and you might develop an attitude.

That's what I meant when I said "kids." I don't mean it literally, but I also don't know a lot of hipsters anymore who are older than about 22. What bothers me about this group - and they're certainly not all hipsters - is that they can't seem to think for themselves. There have been several threads in the last few days with glorious displays of this kind of stupidity. Asking questions is great and certainly what you should do if you want to know the answer to something, but when the author can't even create an understandable question... What the hell do you do then? Lose respect, for starters.
Anyway, I agree with you. Here in Eugene, most of the people I see riding fixed fit into the above category and are therefore contemptible. Completely.

And jesus christ, Scotty, post a picture and someone will be at least able to TRY to help you!

they just hate people that come in asking questions with pre-formulated answers/opinions from what they read online. i can't begin to tell you how sick we get of hearing "well i read online". the second you say that, i can't even tell you how my attitude changes at that point.
