3.5-4.5lb for a wood frame, i would have thought more like 10lb.

Wood is an extremely strong material, a naturally growing composite. Knowing how to make it work is an inspiring challenge for a craftsman.
Gridplan, it depends on the ass. I've seem some mighty, mighty fine asses on bikes. -

With that said, wooden frames are quite cool. There is a craftsman in Japan who makes wooden frames that, if money were no object, I'd buy in a heartbeat:
