Hey,
I'm looking a pair of rims for under 200$..
The Formula/Alex DA28 32H look interesting, good price, comes in a few colors, and have flip flop hubs... I'm planning on using a front brake (dont know if thats of any relevance...)
Not a track racer or anything here, i'm just riding in the street, i do long distances from time to time, but bike maybe 4 or 5 months of the year (winter is too savage in montreal)...
Any suggestions?
Thanks! -

that is a cheap wheel set but if that is all that your budget will allow then you must work within your means. If you can save up a little more cash and get some better wheels, I would recommend it. It does matter if you plan on using brakes, you will need a machined side wall so brakes have something to grab hold of. -

I really like Alex rims. They've really compensated for my shoddy wheelbuilding. -

Hey, people with rim brakes were successfully stopping their bikes for 70 years without machined sidewalls; I do it every day. It's not as if non-machined rims are made out of sponge cake. Machined rims eliminate a break-in period, and they look cleaner.
There are some rims which have angled sidewalls, or super-short sidewalls; it's a bad idea to rely on rim brakes for these, because there isn't enough rim surface for the brake shoes to grip securely. But such rims can be built up with drum or disc hubs.
As always, Sheldon has the answer. -

junkyrustybikes.com - I think the name may be a fair indication of the quality you can expect, but they look the part and the price is certainly right. -

Roughly $150-165 after shipping probably.
Fantastic rims, if your going to be riding the street, but not tricks and whatnot...and you're not massive, the 32h will do ya, and they're pretty light too :> -

Between the two(Alex and Weinmann), I think most people are going to tell you to go with Alex rims.
I owned a pair of alex laced to ??(cant remember) when I rode bmx as a kid, and they took a beating, for sure.
Also owned a pair of weinmanns on my first fixed gear build a few years ago...no so goooo.
Weinmanns look like shit, and even though they're considerably heavy, they just don't have that sturdy feeling when you pick them up.
My vote goes to alex if you're trying to decide between the two. -

Thanks for all you input...
I'm also looking to find a wheelset that looks thiner, maybe not deep V's... But strong enough for road use.
Something like this for example :
