Can someone please explain to me why I can't post a decent pic?
250kb is the limit.... I take my pics down to 1200x1000 and it's no where near 250kb

  1.
    compresiiiOOOOOOON!
  2.
I use the resizing site that is recommened when you go to upload a bike

    http://www.shrinkpictures.com/

that is the link for it, I find it very easy to use.
  3.
I wish it let you set it by bit size instead of area.

This is something that should be done automatically on upload of any pic larger than the cutoff size. Users shouldn't have to fiddle with resizing their pics before posting.
  4.
    "Should" has so many meanings.

I would like that feature. I guess you would too. But "should?"
  5.
Its not hard to resize on your own, but that is a pretty good Idea of having auto sized to fit when uploaded. Not sure on what type of power that would take for greg to make that happen, but definitly would run the pic sizing problem alot better, and make it more consistant.

IMO, yes, should, in the same way that when I upload a picture to flickr, photobucket, etc., I don't have to trouble myself with resizing it for that hosting site. They resize it as needed on upload based on the limits of what their system allows. I think having to resize a picture before posting it is a needless chore; one that people here do over and over again and something the software could do quite easily.

It would be fucking awesome if Greg was able to summon the teams of salaried programmers that Flickr and Photobucket can.

That said, Greg, integration with the Flickr API would be really cool (I don't know much about Photobucket). It would eliminate the resolution problem and the naming problem. Plus, they've got some super smart scaling algorithms that will make all the pics look better.
  7.
My local cycling forum resizes the pics uploaded for the threads automatically, so im sure it can be done.

Find me someone who can make it happen, have them contact me, and it will be done
  8.
I can ask the local forum admin, and see. Maybe it has something to do with the host server you work with or whatever?

hey greg, you use php for this site? i can't remember what i read in your "how to". i've done this at work before, but it was in asp.net. it was for our company's employee photo directory.

aaah, but i don't think it resized the image. only rendered it out smaller. since the file size is the other half of the request, i guess that is not much help. shoot, i thought i had something for you.

velospace proper runs on a heavily modified Drupal engine using php and mysql on the back end.

velospace forums run on a lightly modified Vanilla engine using php and mysql on the back end

Greg, You're doing a great job here. If there's anything I can do to help with artwork or anything, let me know.
    I'm a illustrator/designer, have been for 16 years. T-shirts would be really cool :)

I think it would be nice if we could simply specify an offsite image if we so desire, regardless of where the image is hosted. It would be a lot easier for me to host my own shit and not worry about said photo posting issues. Some sort of integration with Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa, etc. would be fine as long as it were not mandatory.

Greg, how is VS hosted? Do you have CPU, bandwidth, or drive space issues? Otherwise why not let folks upload whatever and look like fools when their 3600 x 2400 images are unviewable. Kidding.

There were some a while back. I slept on them and deeply regret it.

Im game for some t-shirts, or a hoodie, or some kind of winter jacket
  11.
I could be wrong, but I kind of suspect Greg is a designer himself.

    Just trying to give back....
  12.
No, no, I understand. Just saying.
  13.
Do a search on the forums about gear. It doesn't exist right now for some good reasons. Those reasons will likely eventually be mooted by changes in business models and print technologies, but I don't think that's happened yet.
  14.
there should be velospace cycling caps, t shirts, hoodies, and spandex stuff, bed sheets, helmets, gloves, and condoms.

What about a "design contest" or something like that?
Everyone gets to send in their own design for a Velospace shirt and people can vote wich design should be printed..

I'm not sure if this is possible with how this site works atm (i can hardly even spell "HTML"), but say, add an extra category "T-Shirts" (temporarily) to the list where it says "fixed gear bikes - road bikes - bmx, etc.
To vote, people can befriend any specific design, and after a certain amount of time, the shirt with the most "friends" will be the winner..?

    Possibility?
    Good idea?
