well after the death of my bike eddie i have been left with a completely functional wheelset, handlebars, threaded headset, chain, and stem if i get a new bolt.
i wanna make a new ugly beater conversion to prevent my bike from being stolen but there's a problem, am i willing to take a ten speed (preferably not functioning) from craigslist and send it back in time? what do you all think?
side note. people on craigslist think they have things that are valuable that are not, the sad part i dont usually see them reposted meaning some one bought it at that price :( -

IMO, nothing wrong with a conversion. I have a Schwinn Varsity that I converted and it's been a smooth sailing frame. The great thing is that I haven't invested more than $200 into it, frame and all. Just get a BB converter, and replace the ashtabula crank and you're good to go! -

I have a rad late 80s specialized sirrus conversion. I dont regret converting it one bit. Awesome beater, super ugly, super fun to ride. Just save the old drivetrain and you can always convert it back if you feel like you f'ed up. -

go to your local bike collective/co-op and see if they have any frames that fit you. usually they will just give them away or trade them for a few volunteer hours. craigslist fails because there is no fee to post something. otherwise pake track frames are on sale at a link on another forum thats active right now too

its more that the ten speed is a dieing breed thanks to the recent boom in fixed gear riding and by making myself another conversion im helping with the extinction -

10 speeds died off in 1987 thanks to the mountain bike, anything with a rear derailleur attachment bracket isn't worth saving. its evolution, innovate or die -

You should limit that statement to just your bikes. Then I'd agree. :) -

A 'dieing breed' (sic)? I do not see the universe you think you see. Even in fixie-centric areas like the Bay Area, most bikes sold (and most bikes ridden) are geared, coastable bikes (both mountain and road frames).Posted By: gridplan

Hey, they just spent a buncha money broadcasting some race thingies from Europe that used obsolete, dinosaur bikes that cost more than you earned last year. And I hear they're going to run those races next year, too. Plus all those mountain/CX races with the rear derailleur hanger defect bikes. I guess they should just cancel the World Cup and the Olympics competitions; they're just moving deck chairs on a sinking ship.
It is in the nature of ideologues to perceive their own ideologies as expressions of natural law, and all deviations from their ideologies as being aberrant/abnormal. The fact that the deviants may form an overwhelming majority doesn't make an impression. But, a little dose of reality: Not only are there no fixed-speed riders with the celebrity status of Lance Armstrong, there are no fixed-speed riders with the celebrity status of Carlos Sastre or Fabian Cancellara. That's not a reflection of the virtue or vice of fixed-speed riding, but it does reflect its influence on the larger world - which is close to zero.
Alex, do your conversion and don't worry about it. The road frames you're likely to get for cheap are likely to be ones that don't deserve the cool roadie parts anyway.
