Talk: Bike Tools While Riding

"talk" is a velospace community forum. Every week a new topic will be introduced, and comments will be opened until the next question is published.

What bike tools do you carry when you ride?

Do you bring a full saddle bag with multiple tubes, CO2, chain breaker, floor pump, and truing stand? Do you cross your fingers before you leave and ride sans-tools/flat repair kits?

essentials

allen keys, chain tool, spare links, pocket knife, 15mm hex wrench/ beer bottle opener, tube, folding tire, I pulled the threads straight off my hub one time skidding down a hill so I always bring an extra track cog and lockring as well as a chain whip/ lockring tool, naked pictures of your best friends mom. and a patch kit don't forget a patch kit. and

road or off?

On the road, not much.. I keep a 6mm hex, GU gel stuff, and my cell in my camelbak.. I should probably keep more in there.

On the trails I gotta have an extra tube, co2 and tire levers, along with the above.. occasionally my bowl also. Currently fixing up my Cdale mtb.. could use some parts. Oh and while I'm at it.. anyone have a tip for removing a pedal that doesn't want to be removed? I've already broken tools trying to get it off.

On a side note.. I do have to say that those strips that go between the tire and tube to prevent flats work wonders (can't remember the name).

crank and a pump

i always have the crank bros multi tool with chain breaker sweatness, some wierd old combination wrenches that i got with an old schwinn a baby pump and a big fuckin crescent wrench in my back pocket, and a cute little patch kit in my wallet like a condom, sometimes an extra pedal cause i blew one off on a curb once, and rode for a mile with my foot on the nub poking out of the crank. usually a rag too.

Stuff I carry

15 m wrench
at least one tube, preferebly 2 (have double flatted before)
patch kit, only used if no tubes left
mini pump
multi tool w/allens, screwdriver, chainbreaker and spoke wrench
3 tire levers, though I usually only use 2
flashlight!!!
If I'm riding a threaded fork, I like to have a headset wrench available

always a 15.always a baby

always a 15.
always a baby pump.
sometimes a tube.
sometimes a Y-wrench.
thats all.

Tools Needed

I always carry in my bag:
* 2 extra tubes
* 3 plastic tire levers
* spare links
* chain tool
* 1 Co2 catridge and pumper (i may just sell it cuz I really don't like carrying it around since you gotta pay $ to fill up a tire. It reminds me of the same thing as gas and having to pay a service fee is not cool to me that's why I ride a bike)
* frame pump (fills up a tire very fast compared to mini pump and free air!!!!)
* 15mm wrench
* all the sizes of allen keys that are on my bike
* pens
* water
* food snacks

the last 3 all count as tools too because they are needed along the way at some point

Corbin Dallas... Multi Tool

I was gonna say I always ride with a multi-tool someplace but that'd be a lie. A damn lie even. I always SAY I'm gonna bring a multi-tool and a patch kit and a pump and a tire iron and a sandwich and some money and all kindsa shit but it never happens. I mean come on now, any of us kids out there riding track bikes with no brakes on pot hole laden roads (I just changed that word from "rodes" after staring at it for 10 minutes thinkin it didn't quite feel right... jesus I'm intelligent) can't really be responsible enough to a bring a goddamn tool kit with us to the bar at 2 in the morning. I will say this though. A book and a hoodie will save your life out there in a pinch. Taco that deep v when you thought your Nagasawa could bunny hop as good as your old GT did when you were 9? Having something to read while you wait for your drunk ass cousin to sober up and come get you is like the nicest thing in the world. Also have that hoodie in the sack cause you know it's gettin cold. No matter where you live, no matter what season, no matter what time of day somehow it gets cold when you get stranded. I seen snow on the equator once when I got a flat in Ecuador. Crazy world.

Book and a hoodie yah heard?

Hey, does this rag smell like chloroform to you?

the essentials

beer money, papers, herbals, and a hat. i hate getting sweat in my eyes -- oh s&%* I'm blind. and a patch kit.

stuff

Crank Bros. multi tool that has a chain breaker that actually works, spare chain links, two tire levers, 2 co2 cartridges, co2 inflater, patch kit, spare tube, and $$$. On longer rides I sometimes carry a spare tube just in case and generally also have a Topeak mini road Morph pump attached to the frame somewhere.

Always bring...

dog biscuits (good ones in case I need snack), phone, camera, skunky cannabis, lighter, sunglasses and gatorade.

tools are for tools

Currently I don't actually carry anything, but as I start riding daily I'm going to stock up my mess bag with:

1. Blackburn Airfix (C02 inflator, hex keys, whimpy tire lever)
2. Real tire levers (Soma steel, plastic coated)
3. 15mm wrench of course.
4. Patch kit
5. Extra tube (for longer rides only, maybe)
6. Extra C02 (maybe)

Maybe a bit heavy.. I'll have to try it out. Suggestions?

...

If you keep your bike mechanically-tight as a rule then all you'll ever need is:

15 Mill. wrench
Allen set (folding)
1 Tube
1 Mini-pump
1 Puncture repair kit
1 Tire boot
2 Levers

If you ever need more than that round town then God hates you.

Mickeys

I bring an extra wheelset, bars, a socket wrench and allen set to races.

Alley cat shizz I bring mickeys 40 an allen set, and a blunt

Long rides on road I bring pump, tube,
allen alltool, and celly fone

I always ride with a presta adapter on my front wheel

I keep a

15mm socket and a freewheel so I can coast home when my legs begin to hurt from all of the pedaling.

allen key set, valve

allen key set, valve adapter, one tire lever, a tube, and a blunt
